Hiro11,

I have to say that I admire you for actually going through the list and posting your comments, and also that agree with many of your comments - most of them, even. The omission of "Rubber Soul" is egregious, as is leaving out "Another Green World" by Eno. I disagree with some of your specifics, e.g., I've never liked "Pet Sounds" - it just doesn't do it for me at all, I don't think "Forever Changes" is the number 2 album of all time (top 20 definitely, top 10 probably), and I think you are a little too fond of early 80's American punk (as in, I love Husker Du too, man, but they don't deserve three albums on this list, and I don't think Black Flag deserve any). My big complaint is that all three Big Star albums should be on the list, not just "Sister Lovers" (which is, btw, my favorite album ever, along with "Marquee Moon".

Here are some comments from a friend:

>1. The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses

Definitely a good album and one of teh key albums of the late 80s/early 90s,
but no way is it the best ever!

>2. Pixies - Doolittle

some of this is fantastic, but second best album ever? About half of the
songs on it are total filler!!

>3. The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds -- obvious choice, but deserved
>4. Television - Marquee Moon -- obvious choice, but deserved
>5. The Beatles - Revolver -- obvious choice, but deserved
>6. Love - Forever Changes -- obvious choice, but deserved
>7. The Strokes - Is This It -- OK...way, way, way overrated.
>8. The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead -- yeah, great album--one of the best of
>the 80s. Not likely in teh top 10 of all time though!
>9. The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico -- obvious
>choice, but deserved, though I actually like their other albums more--but
>this is the most "important" one
>10. The Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks -- obvious choice, but
>deserved
>11. My Bloody Valentine - Loveless -- very influential, but I find side
>two of it boring. Important, but overrated, in my opinion
>12. The Clash - London Calling -- obvious choice, but deserved
>13. Oasis - Definitely Maybe-not a big fan -- even more overrated than the
>Strokes. This album blows. Putting this ahead of even the worst Beatles
>album on a list like this is idiotic.
>14. Joy Division - Closer -- I have a hard time with this one, and like
>their first way better. But I can see why it's so highly rated--it's a
>unique, very deeply personal album. I guess I respect it more than I like
>it.
>15. Nirvana - In Utero -- overrated. About half of this album is blah
>16. Radiohead - OK Computer -- I actually agree with this being one of the
>very best of the 90s. A truly great album.
>17. Spiritualized - Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space -- HNH
>18. Blondie - Parallel Lines -- surprised to see it so high on this list,
>but I love it.
>19. Nirvana - Nevermind -- better than In Utero, but still overrated. More
>"important" than good, I think.
>20. The White Stripes - White Blood Cells -- HNH
>21. The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground -- absolutely worthy,
>in my opinion. One of the truly great, unique albums ever.
>22. New Order - Technique -- HNH. I know their early stuff, but not this.
>23. Primal Scream - Screamadelica -- HNH
>24. The Beatles - The Beatles (AKA The White Album) -- obvious choice, but
>deserved
>25. The Smiths - Strangeways, Here We Come -- Odd choice--not really their
>best album, I think. Some great songs, but some duds. 26. David Bowie -
>Low -- interesting choice. I don't think it's his best album though, and
>if they're picking this they should pick Eno higher (it's a collaboration
>with him and influenced by him)
>27. Marvin Gaye - What's Going On -- like PET SOUDNS< this one really got
>al of its critical acclaim after the fact. Prettty great, but I think it's
>a bit overrated.
>28. The Verve - A Northern Soul -- HNH
>29. Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation Of Millions to Hold Us Back -- the
>obvious rap choice. Still, I'm not excited by it, myself.
>30. Massive Attack - Blue Lines -- heard part of it, not my thing
>31. Pixies - Surfer Rosa -- Again, half a great album with some filler.
>The Pixies were cool, but this survey overrates them a lot.
>32. The Byrds - The Notorious Byrd Brothers -- awesome. My favorite of
>their albums, and they're one of teh all-time great bands.
>33. Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP -- HNH, but I'd bet I'd hate it!
>34. Patti Smith - Horses -- would rank even higher than this on my list!!
>35. Jeff Buckley - Grace -- overratd--he has an amazing voice, but the
>album mixes brilliance with self-indulgence. With the right producer, he
>might have made something great.
>36. Kraftwerk - Trans-Europe Express -- I love this.
>37. Oasis - (What's The Story) Morning Glory -- even worse than the other
>one!
>38. Scott Walker - Scott 4 -- Interesting, definitely his best album. The
>British love him, aMericans ignore him. Overrated, I think, but I do like
>it.
>39. Ramones - Ramones -- should be higher!!
>40. Coldplay - A Rush Of Blood To The Head -- never even heard of!!
>41. Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures -- Great, great album. Worthy of this
>spot.
>42. The Stooges - Fun House -- well, yuo NEED to hear this! I like RAW
>POWER better, but I can see why this is the critical fave. worthy.
>43. David Bowie - Hunky Dory -- I never understood why critics like this so
>much, but it is quite good. In my opinion it's kind of a warm-up for the
>better ZIGGY STARDUST
>44. Radiohead - The Bends -- haven't heard this one yet, but suspect it's
>great.
>45. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV -- the obvious heavy metal choice.
>Probably tehir best--a worthy choice.
>46. The Streets - Original Pirate Material -- never heard of!
>47. Bob Dylan - Blood On The Tracks -- I can't believe Dylan isn't higher
>than this--most listsw would put three of his albums up near the top.
>This is definitely one of the trhee great Dylan albums. Interesting that
>they chose his great 70s album rather than the really influential 60s ones.
> Everyone should own it!!
>48. REM - Automatic For The People -- I like REM, but find their albums
>somwehat lacking. Other than MURMUR, this is probably my favorite one,
>though I still think it's not a masterpiece..
>49. Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation -- I agree with you--I like them better
>in small doses. This is the critical fave of theirs. I thin it's good,
>but a bit overrated
>50. Blur - Parklife -- as 90s stuff goes, this is obviously a very
>important record. I like it a lot, but it's not a total fave.
>51. The Smiths - Hatful Of Hollow -- why this and not the self-titled
>album, which is probably their second best?
>52. The Rolling Stones - Exile On Main St -- Again--odd the Stones are so
>low on this list. This is the critical fave, and maybe their best. Hard
>to say. It's grown on me more than any of their others.
>53. Slint - Spiderland -- HNH
>54. The Smiths - The Smiths -- here it is! Redundant putting this and
>HATFUL on the list. One or the other, I say.
>55. Aphex Twin - Richard D James Album -- HNH, but my sister says I'd like
>it.
>56. Jay-Z - The Blueprint -- never heard of
>57. Roxy Music - For Your Pleasure -- One of my very favorite bands--I'd
>vote for any of their first five albums on this list. This is a perfectly
>great choice.
>58. The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers -- probably my favorite Stones
>album.
>59. The Specials - The Specials -- best ska album I've heard. 60. Big Star
>- Third/Sister Lovers -- I can see why they'd pick this over RADIO CITY.
>One of my personal faves too.
>61. The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs -- HNH, though Loud Fans pick this
>as an all-time fave. What I've heard of this band doesn't excite me.
>62. Pulp - His 'N' Hers - HNH
>63. Dusty Springfield - Dusty In Memphis -- why her over a bunch of
>deserving black soul artists? Great album, but it relies too much on cover
>versions for my taste.
>64. Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left -- Another after-the-fact critical fave.
>Hard to say what his best album is--all three are excellent.
>65. Duran Duran - Rio -- Liked at the time, has not aged well. Actually, I
>never liked the whole album--I thought it had a bunch of duds on it. Can't
>believe it would still make a list like this.
>66. The Flying Burrito Brothers - The Gilded Palace Of Sin -- the ultimate
>"country-rock" album. Definitely good, but not really my thing.
>67. Underworld - Dubnobasswithmyheadman -- never heard of
>68. Dexys Midnight Runners - Searching For The Young Soul Rebels --
>punk-era modern soul by annoying white boys. Way overrated.
>69. Andrew WK - I Get Wet -- never heard of
>70. The Verve - Urban Hymns -- HNH
>71. Eminem - The Slim Shady LP -- HNH
>72. AC/DC - Back In Black -- I suppose it's another obvious metal choice.
>I always hated the guy's voice and their lyrics are idiotic, but this album
>does have a bunch of great hooks.
>73. Michael Jackson - Off The Wall -- probably better than THRILLEr, but I
>think both albums have some dud songs on them
>74. The White Stripes - Elephant -- HNH 75. Lou Reed - Transformer -- Yuck!
> How this could be on any list in front of any Velvet Underground albums
>is beyond me! Some great songs on it, but a very erratic album.
>76. Pulp - This Is Hardcore -- HNH
>77. The Coral - The Coral -- HNH
>78. Suede - Dog Man Star -- don't really remember the few songs I've heard.
>79. The Clash - The Clash -- why so low? Should be much higher on this
>list, especially from the UK!
>80. Neil Young - After The Gold Rush -- I've never been a NEil Young fan,
>but I suppose this is his best album.
>81. The Jesus And Mary Chain - Psychocandy -- also way overratd. I hate
>the production. Has a few amazing moments mixed in.
>82. Wu-Tang Clan - Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) -- HNH
>83. Van Morrison - Astral Weeks -- a big critical fave that usually falls
>higher on these lists. Worth its acclaim, I think. Unique and beautiful.
>Grew on me over the years
>84. De La Soul - 3 Feet High And Rising -- HNH. Big critical fave.
>85. The Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed -- another obvious chice. Could
>argue it's their best.
>86. David Bowie - Heroes -- odd choice. I love the title track, but I
>don't think this is a very good album.
>87. The Slits - Cut -- A good album, but no way does it belong on a list
>like this.
>88. Primal Scream - Exterminator -- HNH
>89. Stevie Wonder - Innervisions -- Not his best--SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE
>or TALKING BOOK are probably better. Critics don't love him the way they
>used to. I like him a lot, but not really as much as most people.
>90. Leonard Cohen - Songs Of Love And Hate -- I don't know this album by
>him. Usually people pick his first, which I love. Very stark, dark folk.
>91. Queens Of The Stone Age - Rated R -- HNH
>92. Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92 - HNH
>93. Joni Mitchell - Hejira -- I never liked Joni to begin with, but this is
>a really odd choice--it's her jazz album, not one of teh folk albums that
>are her most acclaimed.
>94. Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home -- His fourth best album. A
>total classic, but where are HIGHWAY 61 and BLONDE ON BLONDE?
>95. Pink Floyd - Piper At The Gates Of Dawn -- THE British psychedelic
>classic. Great, but I like a lot of American psych albums better.
>96. The Vines - Highly Evolved -- HNH
>97. PJ Harvey - Stories From The City, Stories from The Sea -- No way!!
>All of her first three albums are miles better than this!
>98. Madonna - Like A Prayer -- Not my thing.
>99. The Congos - Heart Of The Congos -- never heard of
>100. The Beach Boys - Surf's Up -- OK, I guess, but not my choice for their
>second best album

Weird list...
>

He also said:

no Who?
no Hendrix?
no Elvis? Chuck Berry? Buddy Holly?
no James Brown? Otis Redding? Aretha Franklin?
no Springsteen? (only the Americans revere him, I guess)
Another huge critical hit that's missing is Derek & The Dominoes LAYLA,
though I'd argue it's overrated anyway.

Those are always on these lists!

I added:

Good point. Lots of missing artists. No Kinks or Talking Heads. Surprised
they didn't throw the Zombies album on there. W/the AC/DC they should throw
on Judas Priest "BRITISH Steel"!

****! Forgot "Another Green World", I might also throw "Before and After Science" a bone. I also enjoy "taking Tiger Mountain"... too much Eno worship, though.

Alright, too much Husker, I agree. I'm a sucker for 82-88 SST releases. Let's settle on putting "New day Rising" on the list and leave it at that.

But, what about "Meat Puppets 2" or Minutemen "Double Nickles on the Dime" (****, can't believe I forgot that one)? Both are truly great.

Total agreement on Big Star. IMO, the first album has a few folksy weak spots, but Radio City is solid throughout. Chris Bell's solo album "I am the Cosmos" is almost as good as anything Big Star did.

Others I'd consider for my personal top 100:

Big Black "Songs About ****ing"
Can: "Tago Mago"
Ramones: "Rocket to Russia"
Swervedriver: "Mezcal Head" (unsung classic, IMO)
Wire: "Pink Flag"
The Cars: S/T
Lynyrd Skynyrd "Pronounced L...."
Daft Punk: "Homework"
Eric B. and Rakim: "Follow the Leader"
Pere Ubu: "Dub Housing"
Boston: S/T (once again, I'm not joking...)
Slayer: "Reign in Blood"
Jane's Addiction: "Ritual de Lo Habitual"
Guns N' Roses: "Appetite for Destruction" (another HUGE omission)
Prince: "Purple Moon" and maybe "Dirty Mind" (where the **** is Prince?)

If you can include soundtracks:
"Saturday Night Fever"
"The Harder They Come"

If you can include boxed sets or greatest hits comps:

James Brown: "Star Time"
Buzzcocks: "Singles Going Steady"
New Order: "Substance" 2 disc version.
Bob Marley: "Songs of Freedom"

I would go with "Here Come the Warm Jets" before "Tiger Mountain" and "Before and After Science", but that's just me...

What about the fact there's no Replacements albums on the list?!? "Let It Be" has got to be up there somewhere.

But, what about "Meat Puppets 2" or Minutemen "Double Nickles on the Dime" (****, can't believe I forgot that one)? Both are truly great.
Um, yeah. Also, I didn't see any X albums, but maybe I'm just not looking carefully enough.

Total agreement on Big Star. IMO, the first album has a few folksy weak spots, but Radio City is solid throughout. Chris Bell's solo album "I am the Cosmos" is almost as good as anything Big Star did.
Best to save it for another thread, but I have a strange feeling the "folksy weak spots" you refer to are likely my favorite songs on the first Big Star album...

An astonishing thing for me, given that NME is an English rag, is the lack of any Manic Street Preachers (again, unless I'm blind). I would have thought "The Holy Bible" at least would be there, and maybe "Everything Must Go" (my fave of theirs) would make the list, too.

D'oh, calling out my omissions out again. All valid points

Yeah, where the hell is "Let it Be" or (my favorite) "Tim"?

Sorry, no disrespect to Big Star at all, but "My Life is Right" nand "The Ballad of El Goodo" annoy me for some reason. "Don't Lie to Me" "Feel" and, of course, the "That 70's Show" theme "In The Streets" totally redeem the album, though.

How about X's "Wild Gift"...then again "Los Angeles" is pretty friggen terrific. Let's cheat and include the twofer currently in stores.

You're right again about "The Holy Bible" Most. harrowing. album. ever. Definitely deserves inclusion in the top 30. I paid almost thirty bucks for the Japanese import version with the live stuff. Me=sucker.

In addition to the ones I already mentioned, where the hell is:
Metallica: :"Master of Puppets" and "Ride the Lightning"
Yes: "The Fragile" and "Close to the Edge"
The (English) Beat: "Just Can't Stop It"
Bob Marley: "Burnin"
Sly and the Family Stone: "There's a Riot Goin' On" and "Stand!"
Parliament: "Mothership Connection"
Funkadelic: "Maggot Brain" and "One Nation under a Groove"
Black Uhuru: "Sinsemilla" and "Red"
Tribe Called Quest "Low End Theory"
The Who "The Who Sell Out", "Who's Next" and "Tommy"
Allman Bros Band: "Eat a Peach" and "Beginnings"
Nick Drake :" Pink Moon"
Bruce Springsteen: "Nebraska" and "Born to Run"
X-Ray Spex: "Germ Free Adolencents"
Elvis Costello: "My Aim is True", "This Year's Model", "Armed Forces"
Sonic Youth: "Sister"
Minor Threat: "Minor Threat"
Black Flag: "Damaged"
Husker Du: "New Day Rising", "Flip Your Wig" and "Zen Arcade"
New York Dolls: S/T
Cheap Trick S/T and "Heaven Tonight"
Dinosaur Jr "You're Living all Over Me"
Jimi Hendrix (!) " Are You Expoerienced" and "Electric Ladyland"
Chemical Brothers: "Dig Your Own Hole"
Green Day: "Dookie" (no, I'm not joking)
Gary Numan: "The Pleasure Principle"
Camper van Beethoven: "Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart"
The Byrds: "Sweetheart of the Rodeo"
Beastie Boys: "Paul's Boutique"
The Grateful Dead (!) "American Beauty" and "Workingman's Dead"
The Jam: "Sound Affects"
George Harrison: All Thnigs Must Pass"
The Beatles "Rubber Soul" THIS IS A HUGE OMISSION.
Soundgarden: "BadMotorFinger"
Little Feat: "Dixie Chicken"
Talking Heads (!): "More Songs about Buildings and Food" and "Remain in Light"

...and many, many others I'm forgetting.
I like your list alot better Hiro

I would probably add;

Big Star; Radio City...better album overall than Third/Sister Lovers
The Raspberries; Starting Over....a lost gem, great songs by Eric Carmen before he became a total sap
Paul McCartney & Wings; Band On The Run... his best solo work
Uncle Tupelo; Anodyne...great album any way you slice it
Cheap Trick; In Color....Heaven Tonight and In Color can almost be a double album
John Lennon; Plastic Ono Band
The Replacements; All For Nothing....I usually don't recomend "Greatest Hits" packages but this is really good.
Beatles; Abbey Road....an even BIGGER omission
Badfinger; Wish You Were Here....If this album hadn't been pulled then Badfinger would be a household name today

The problem with any magazine writer/critic's list is that it's enormously subjective. This chap seems to have a leaning more toward U.K. acts who drone on and on about how much it rains in Manchester. While it's subjective I still think there are certain albums he left off that SHOULD be on the list. Oh well...take it with a grain of salt.
