Trying to find this 80's song
 

I'm trying to find this song, but don't have much to go on.

Its a song that was released in the mid 80's sung by a male artist. The chorus has these lyrics:

'If I was a solder" or
"If I was a sailer"

Can't quite remember. Anyone know who sings this?

There's "If I was a sculptor" from "Your Song" by Elton John....but that was from Late 60's.

I'm sure that either Wham!, George Michael or The Pet Shop Boys have a song somwhere with the line "If i was a sailor..." ;)

Oh man, how did I miss this thread? It is indeed "If I Was" by Midge Ure, from his first solo album The Gift. It was a #1 UK hit in 1985, after years of generating hits with Ultravox, none of which ever made it to #1 ("Vienna" peaked at #2). The 12" extended version of "If I Was" is cool, too. Midge Ure is my 2nd favorite solo artist of all time, so let me know if you need any further info.

By the way, "If I was" is bad grammar...it should be "If I were". ;)
