Most of the ones I looked through were SHN. Even though the quality is better, I don't want to spend the time to download the huge files. They're may be some in mp3 format on there though, just not that I saw.

almost all of the files you find are going to be .shn files. These are pretty much the only accepted form of audio files used by the trading community these days. There is a new form called FLAC that is slowly gaining acceptance, but the majority of files are still .shn.

.shn files are completely lossless as far as the quality of the recording. They are a lot bigger than .mp3 but if you have a broadband connection, it shouldn't be a problem.

there's a really good help page here, to get started with using and decoding .shn files. I figured it out in like 45 seconds.

Don't let a new file type keep you away from this gold mine of music.

FYI, you can also download a plug-in shnamp for Winamp that allows you to play the .shn files. The files are huge, but are noticeably better sounding than .mp3

Yeah, the only bands available are the ones that specifically allow taping and trading of their shows.

If you're familiar with FTP, you can connect directly to the servers and download the whole directory that way. Unfortunately, the only way to do it through HTTP is one or two songs at a time. I haven't regretted any of the time I've spent downloading shows.

I thought I had linked to this page earlier, but here is the main page for the archive. It will help to answer some questions and can direct you to shows you might be interested in.

My backlog of moe. shows to download here should keep me busy into the spring at least... Wondered if you knew about etree Bust, figured you did...

shn files are huge and take a long time to download... Don't even attempt it on a dialup. After you DL them simply convert to .wav files and burn em' to disc, purge and start over... I didn't click the link that Bust provided but the info should be in there on how to convert shn files.

Exactly what I was thinking. I have heard of exactly four of these bands, and only like one of those. I'm such a loser.

Psuedopod has an awesome cover of Ben Harper's "Burn One Down" on their 5-17-01 show. One of my favorite things to do on the archive is just do a search for my favorite songs and see who has covered them. You can find some great renditions.

That sucks for you. You're certainly missing out on some great music. What's the matter? No 50 Cent?

It certainly is a shame. Many of these bands sound their best live, and are hidden gems. I'll take a Tim Reynolds, Jack Johnson, John Butler Trio, Keller Williams, or Flecktones show before listening to most radio these days.

Some people will just never know what they're missing. If you're interested in Jack Johnson, check out the 2-10-02 show. Amazing sound quality and just a great overall performance.
