Me on MTV for Ryan Adams segment

I've mentioned this here before, but I never really gave any details. MTV has a new show called "The Big Urban Myth Show", and they'll be doing a segment on Ryan Adams in the third episode this year. They're trying to dispel or prove some myth about Adams at the Nashville show on 10.14.02.

I was interviewed for it because I was at the show and I wrote a review for www.tinymixtapes.com. I wanted to get in a few things about Peter Cooper's article for The Tennessean, specifically the parts where he says "Ryan went Ballistic" and was "spewing expletives". They told me that we would get to talk about that before Cooper got there, but he showed up and they wouldn't let me say anything about it. I didn't stay for his interview, though, so I don't really know what kinds of things he said about the show. Nothing good, I'm sure, because MTV knew about the call Ryan made to that guy's voicemail.

I don't know how MTV will edit my comments, but I tried to be as objective as possible, saying things exactly as I saw them. It doesn't hurt that I had a bootleg of the show and listened to it several times before I went in for the interview. Peter Cooper's review was, indeed, hyperbolic, and if you don't believe me get a copy of the Nashville boot and hear for yourself (Ryan Adams allows free trade of show boots).

On the cool side of things, I got to sit in the dressing room of the Ryman with a bunch of folks doing a soundcheck for a Woody Guthrie tribute they were doing last night. So I saw Nora and Arlo Guthrie, which was very cool. Nora was talking about some purse she had that the makeup artist "OMG" was "in love with", and Arlo was fussing about not wanting to wear makeup.

Another thing I think is pretty funny, is that while I was trying to listen to Ryan kicking out the fan, which has gotten old to me by now, I could mostly only close my eyes in my chair and listen to the pretty versions of "When the Stars go Blue", "Tomorrow", and "Dear Chicago", complete with Ruth and Sara on violin and cello. So pretty. That goes to show what I thought the important things about the night were. What I mostly gave Ryan hell about in my interview was the 20 minute long version of Dylan's "Joey" that he played with Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. Snooze...

I'll respond!
Congratulations, honey.

Very cool, Penny. I don't watch much MTV nowadays, so I don't know their schedule. Any idea when it'll be on?

I think they said the first Tuesday in March at 9:30 p.m. central. I will keep you updated if you are interested.

I don't keep up with MTV much, myself, which is why I'm surprised they sought me out. I don't even think they play music anymore.

Just saw this on MTV tonight after the Real World. The Ryan Adams segment was leading of the show. You did a good
job.

The whole re-enactment thing was kind of cheesy though.
:)

Wow, I had no idea it was you!
Just replaying it on the Tivo.
Good job! :)

And the re-enactment was cheesy

Dammit, I got distracted by the video to Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt on CMT. I caught the end of the segment, but missed you.
