regarding the grammys: what do the voters look for?

just curious. since the categories contain such a variety of talent what do the voters look for? i mean how can you compare nelly to norah jones (i think their in the same cat.), etc? when it's music, i just dont understand what they focus on. songwriting? overall sound? melodies? arrangement? etc.

can someone with more knowledge explain it to me. thanks!

SONG of the Year = songwriting

RECORD of the year = overall sound (= recording of the year)

They look for greased palms and sexual favors.

(At least that's what I have to conclude when I look at their vastly idiotic choices year after year; an awards show for the most subjective of all the arts... )
