Lavigne Mispronounces David Bowie's Name
Zowie! Teenage Rocker Avril Lavigne Has Trouble Pronouncing David Bowie's Name
The Associated Press
NEW YORK Jan. 7 —
Ground control to Avril Lavigne: It's David Bowie, like doughy not Bowie, like Howie.
That's how the 18-year-old Canadian singer pronounced the veteran rock star's name when the Grammy nominations were announced Tuesday.
Lavigne was helping announce the nominees for best male rock vocal performance at Madison Square Garden when she made the gaffe, pronouncing Bowie's name like "Howie."
When an Associated Press reporter told her afterward that she'd flubbed Bowie's name, Lavigne said: "Oops! I knew that was going to happen, I knew I was going to pronounce someone's name wrong."
Lavigne that's pronounced luh-VEEN received five Grammy nominations of her own, including best new artist and song of the year for her hit "Complicated." She tied seven other artists who received a leading five Grammy nominations, including veterans Bruce Springsteen and Sheryl Crow.
Bowie, who turns 56 on Wednesday, was nominated for the song "Slow Burn." He won a Grammy in 1984 for his long-form video, "David Bowie."
---
Of course, to be "rock musician" these days you don't need to know anything about "actual rock music," you just turn on MTV and TRL teaches you everything.

She's 18.... look at her age and look at the type of music she plays... I assume she grew up listening to Nirvana and Green Day. Who cares if she doesn't know Bowie? It's not like "Major Tom" or "Young Americans" would've been an influence on her rock anyway.

I know that you aren't trying to say that all 18 year olds are like that fake piece of junk (or at least I hope not)
We aren't all like that.

Who cares if she is 18, unless she has hasn't taken her eyes off herself and her music in 18 years, she would know who Davie Bowie is..
I think we all know that music didn't take 18 years

Well, it is possible, that she got nervous, since she was announcing names live on TV at 7 in the morning. I doubt that's easy, so a slip-up might happen.
It would have been nice if she apologized or something. Then again, she's probably used to having her last time mispronounced all the time.

Who cares if she pronounced the name wrong? David Bowie isn't somebody I would just assume that all people would have just heard about. Tho I do think her manager or somebody should have gone over the list with her first to make sure she had the names right.

Ha! Remember the VMA's where Sir Paul called Lauren Hill Lawrence Hill instead. Ha.
Paul can get away with that though.

And Major Tom was a song by Peter Schilling. I think you mean "Space Oddity" referring to Bowie songs.
As for Avril Bodean, or whoever she is...she's Canadian. We can't expect her to know very much. *ducks*

Craig Kilborn was just joking about this with Kaley Cuoco [That hot 17 year old blonde from 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter].
For the record, she got it right...

I knew of David Bowie and how to pronounce his name before I was 10 years old. For an adult in the music industry (she is 18 and therefore an adult) it's absolutely unacceptable.
Of course, this is the same chick who gets pissed off if you call her a pop singer and considers herself punk.

Did anyone see the interview on CBS Moning News with Avril, Nelly and Ashanti? Avril was rolling her eyes and fiddling with her hair when someone else was asked a question. She acted like a spoiled 12 year old. Young or not there's no excuse for behavior like that on national television; I just wanted to smack her!
