Today's CDs (12/29)

I went on a music-buying-binge today. After about 5 hours of rummaging through cds at 3 different stores I strutted away with the following:

Echo and the Bunnymen - "Heaven Up Here"
Joy Division - "Closer"
The Smiths - "The Queen is Dead"
Miles Davis - "Kind of Blue"
Bjork - "Vespertine"
Tom Waits - "Rain Dogs"
Tom Waits - "Blood Money"
Sonic Youth - "Sister"

All of them are cds that I've had on a "priority list" for the past 3 or 4 monthes. Unfortunately, I'm not done though. I need to find a place that has Television - "Marquee Moon" and the Pavement DVD. I might check on some Unwound, Boards of Canada, Kraftwerk, and Tubeway Army as well.

What bands are you working on getting the complete discography for? For me: knocking away at Sonic Youth one album at a time. I'm also working on Echo and the Bunnymen and The Pixies, but they aren't as high up on my list of priorities. After that, it is on to Tom Waits.

Also, do you have an "album-purchasing-priority-list" that you actually follow when you go shopping?

Recent Spins:
Brian Eno - "Before and After Science"
Bonnie "Prince" Billy - "Ease Down the Road"
Metro Area - s/t

I've been picking up quite a few Brian Eno albums recently, but I don't plan on getting all of them. I only seek out the complete discography of a particular artist if I'm sure I'll enjoy all of the albums, EPs, etc...

Coldplay - Rush of Blood to the Head
David Gray - A New Day at Midnight
New Order - Substance

I'm still working on getting the Smiths and Beatles discography but there are soooo many.

Stressful week at work, so I brought in a bunch of mellow CDs. Today's picks:

Norah Jones - Come Away With Me
V/A - Jazz For When You're Alone
Bebel Gilberto - Tanto Tempo
Alison Krauss - Forget About It
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Diana Krall - All For You

There's no artist I enjoy so much more than other artists that I feel compelled to make sure I have every last EP. Wouldn't mind getting the first two Jayhawks albums (pre-Hollywood Town Hall) at some point, though...

Given that my musical desires exceed my budget, I have to prioritize. (I was at Best Buy this weekend with a giftcard, and only one of the three CDs I was interested in was available. My list kept me from purchasing stuff I would've regretted later.)

Orchestra Baobob -- Specialist In All Styles
Iran -- The Moon Boys
The Clipse -- Lord Willin'
Wire -- Read & Burn 01
Various Artists -- Chains & Black Exhaust
Felix Da Housecat -- Excursions
The Carter Family -- 1927 - 1934 (discs 2 and 4)
Boredoms -- Pop Tatari
Farben -- Textstar
Zorn -- Cruel Summer
20 Years of Dischord Box Set

QOTD: Thankfully I kicked the completist's bug a few years ago. It's a fool's game that only leads to trouble (i.e. $$$ and some real crappy records).

Today:

Sigur Ros - ()
Get Up Kids - On A Wire (gets more blah each listen)
Starflyer 59 - Gold
Jason Mraz

QOTD: I don't think I try to get all the albums from any bands. The Pixies would be one that I'm close with and also Pink Floyd (although, there are a few non-essential albums I wouldn't waste my money on). I agree with Yancey, too much money for too little benefit. Nobody gets it right with each album if they have more than 3 or 4 releases.

One of my Christmas gifts was The Beatles Anthology book, so over the holidays I've been listening to all the Beatles CDs in order. Also today I'm listening to:

Banco - Darwin
Plasmatics - New Hope for the Wretched/Metal Priestess
Richard and Linda Thompson - I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight
Blackfoot - Highway Song Live
Michael Penn - MP4
Gong - Expresso II

Q of Day: I have most that I want. I very badly need to have "Fenetics" by Jules and the Polar Bears to have all 3 of theirs (but it's LONG OOP and almost impossible to find). I also need to eventually get all by Brand X and Fermata.

I enjoy it quite a bit. I've been trying my hardest to broaden my musical horizons over the past few months, so this is a refreshing change of pace from my usual rock-heavy diet. On a somewhat related note, I'll probably be picking up that Out Hud album later in the week.

Something seems wrong here... I haven't kicked the completist's bug. I spent a bunch of $$ on Mince Spies and How Did I Get Here?

The Clipse record is great! I really dig it... The Neptunes shot their load on this album.

And Mike: I completely agree about moving away from rock. Pikul, in his subtle ways, convinced me of that earlier this year. Combine him with a friend who's a huge dance fan, and my tastes have done a 180.
