Oldies- Need some suggestions
I am needing some suggestions for oldies that are a little more "mellow" than the typical sock hop music. Here are some examples of the sort of stuff I am looking for:
Dusty Springfield- Angel of the Morning Ben E. King- Spanish Harlem ChiLites- Oh Girl Buddy Holly- Rave On Otis Redding- Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay The Box Tops- The Letter Rolling Stones- Wild Horses The Association- Never My Love Jay and the Americans- This Magic Moment Any suggestions? |
Add some of these:
Badfinger: Without You Beatles: If I Fell Dave Clark Five: Because Gerry & the Pacemakers: You'll Never Walk Alone Van Morrison: Brown-eyed Girl |
from Dusty Springfiled, Son of Preacher Man
|
I'm a big fan of Dusty Springfield and I don't recall hearing a version of "Angel of the morning" done by her. The only version I'm familiar with was done by Juice Newton in the 70's...if I'm mistaken could someone tell me where to find Dusty's version?
Eric Burdon & The Animals: San Franciscan Nights Badfinger : Day After Day Jefferson Airplane : Triad The Byrds: Everybody Has Been Burned, Rennaisance Fair Sam Cooke : A Change Is Gonna Come Dusty Springfield: Windmills of your mind Michael |
These are good suggestions. Keep them coming.
Fiver, Dusty's version is frequently on Kazaa. That Sam Cooke song is AWESOME! |
Johnny Cash - Burning Ring Of Fire (classic)
|
Beach Boys - God Only Knows
Simon & Garfunkel - Homeward Bound/America Al Green - Lets Stay Together Marvin Gaye - What's Going On Gladys Knight & The Pips - Midnight Train to Georgia The Five Stairsteps - O-o-h Child Everly Brothers - Let It be Me Some sappy - all classic. |

Originally posted by Ginwen No ideas, but I wonder if that's one of the many instances on Kazaa where something's wrongly attributed (actually, I hate that, since I think I've found a new version of a song and it's the same old version). |
I'm a pretty big fan of Dusty Springfield...I have most of her released catalogue on CD except for a few that have come out from her 70's repertoire in the last couple years (just haven't had the chance to pick them up), and I can't find this song listed on any of them. I really like the Juice Newton song of the same name, but I think Dusty could also do an excellent rendition (assuming this is the same song I'm thinking of). Only thing I can think of is that perhaps there are still some unreleased albums out there or it's from some concert or bootleg.

Etta James' "At Last" is an awesome tune. Bus, I think I am going to spend a Saturday downloading those tunes and trying them out. |

oh man, fiver, thanks for posting Badfinger "Day After Day"
I've literally been looking for the name of that song for about 6 months. All I really knew was the tune, no words, and know one knew what I was talking about. some others: Harry Nilsson "Without You' Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young "Southern Cross" Searchers "Needles and Pins" Zager and Evans "In the Year 2525" Ricky Nelson "Garden Party" Ricky Nelson "Travelin' Man" |
If you want a treat, check out McCann and Harris: "Compared to What." This was a nice little byproduct of the searches from the tunes listed here.
I heard this tune years ago on NPR and couldn't believe when I stumbled across it. |
Xanager:
I absolutely love Badfinger's rendition of "Without You" but I've never caught Harry Nilsson's version. Have you heard them both where you could compare them for me? Since we're talking about Badfinger here, how about: Badfinger: Carry on Til Tomorrow Badfinger: Maybe Tomorrow Badfinger: No Matter What (classic radio staple) Badfinger: Give It Up Great stuff, always:D Michael |
I think Nilsson actually was the first to do "Without You." I really like the Badfinger and Mariah Carey versions for what they are, but for me, Nilsson always strikes a special tone.
|
Actually Without You is a Pete Ham/Tom Evans composition I believe. I don't recall Badfinger doing a lot of other people's compositions; Paul McCartney's Come and Get It is a notable exception. I believe Nilsson covered the tune shortly after it appeared on Badfinger's No Dice. I've always wanted to hear the Nilsson version but for some reason I've never picked up one of his albums. Would it be worth my while to pick up the original album this song is from, or a compilation ?

Cool, thanks for the info. I guess I made a wrongful assumption. Plus this just reinforces the fact that there is so much incorrect info on the net. I mean, I don't take everything I read as fact, but when the majority of people say something, I lean toward it being true. When I searched all I found was Nilsson. This time I searched a little more in depth, and found out Nilsson covered.
The two versions are just sung in a completely different manner. The Nilsson version is the one I'm used to, so, by human nature, it's the way I thought it was supposed to be sung, and since Badfinger wasn't singing it like that, I didn't like it as much. I need to listen to it like I've never even heard the song before. I would probably just pick up a compilation. |
