In an ideal world, I would be able to say Led Zeppelin and the Ramones. :D

Worldwide, Abba was probably the biggest artist of the 70's, although they never duplicated their popularity in the USA. I still remember a Rolling Stone interview with Pete Townsend from the early-80's where he said that Abba was more rock than the Beatles.

I pass that along...don't think I agree.

Penny, you're crazy. The Ramones?! I mean, my god... The 70's sucked, anyways.

What's your favorite decade, then? I think the 70's was great because you had a whole spectrum of music - from hard rock to soft rock, from disco to metal to punk, from R&B to jazz, from bubblegum to adult contemporary. The 70's had it all.

URBneathME 11-21-02 01:51 PM

Hmmm... The 80's was a fun decade. Can't say much for the 90's, though. And I have not a clue what the 2000-2010 decade (whatever it will be called) is all about. It has no personality yet.

Wow, an incredibly intelligent, well-voiced opinion and a personal attack, all in one post by a newbie! I never thought about it in this light until URBneathME revealed that an entire decade's worth of music "sucked!" What other philosophical gems do you have to share with us?

Let me see, who was REALLY big in the 70's? (I was around then, listening to a lot of music - of course I WAS just a kid...)

Mega artists of the 70's:

Led Zeppelin
KISS
ABBA
The Eagles
Fleetwood Mac
Elton John
Queen
Bee Gees
Grand Funk Railroad (early 70's, but VERY successful)
Alice Cooper

In no particular order.

Of course, that's just off the top of my head....

Aphex Twin 11-22-02 12:08 PM

Kraftwerk

Don't mind if I don't pay attention to this post. If I recall correctly, you're the one who doesn't know who Gram Parsons is. Ahem. I rest my case.

MJKTool 11-22-02 02:25 PM

Its all about Led Zeppelin

Phil Pugliese 11-23-02 09:59 PM

Zep and Yes

Also Willie Nelson and the Carpenters.

The 70's, home to classic hits from Abba to Zeppelin, Led.

The 70's was an incredible decade for music. I'd say it was even better than the 80's 90's, certainly this decade; although most of the great bands were seldom heard on the radio.

Led Zeppelin
The Clash/Sex Pistols (and the rest of the UK punk scene)
The Ramones/Blondie (and the rest of the NY punk scene)
ABBA
Elton John
David Bowie
and yeah, some of the disco stuff was very good.

The 70's puts this unoriginal regurgitated decade to shame.

Well, along with many of those mentioned above, how come nobody is discussing the topic?

(the) Who ruled the 70s. ;)

Well for those of you who are interested you might be suprised to know that the group YES had the most sellouts and also hold the record for the most people to attend a stadium concert. JFK stadium with over 150,000 in attendance. They might not have ever had the radio hits that other groups and artists had but they had more concert attending fans.

I think you've miscalculated - it was a series of concerts that averaged an estimated 105,000 in attendance (each). ;) And according to JFK Stadium history, only 3 acts have ever managed to sell-out (110,000 capacity): Bruce Springsteen, Peter Frampton and The Rolling Stones. So it puts into question the validity of the source that state that Yes actually did have an attendance as high as noted above.

And I sincerely doubt that Yes out attendanced Led Zep during the 70s. :D They had some mammoth shows with a lot of people, but Zeppelin owned.

Obviously, it was Foghat that ruled the 70's. ;)

I just found out that URBneathME is my brother. He signed up here to pester me, so apparently he's bored at work like everyone else here. He got me pretty good, though.
