What do you think of this band name?
 

I'm forming a band with a girl here on campus and this name popped into my head. We're trying to concern ourselves with the music for now, but I just thought I'd put this out there since it came to me rather suddenly and has stuck over the past few days.

The name of the band would (possibly) be: Sleep, Sweet Macondo.

Its an allusion to Gabriel Garcia Marquez's novel One Hundred Years of Solitude (my favorite book), and more specifically, the part where the entire town gets insomnia. Its not limited to that...I'm hoping that people would take different meanings from the title.

As far as our vision goes with the band, we're going to be instrumental and out of the various riffs we've been kicking around, its rather melancholy. I know its hard to determine if a band's name goes well with their style when you haven't heard the music, but I'm interested to see reactions to this.

Thumbs up? Thumbs down? Twikoff?

Not sure about a comma in a band name. Could you amalgamate?

Sleep-Sweet Macondo, or Sleepsweetmacondo, or ssm?

It's good if you want endless questions about the band name.

It's seems a little weighty to me and not catchy enough for people to remember, but then again it might go well with the type of music you're thinking of.

I'd lose the comma, but other than that, it's a memorable name and not bad at all.

Why is everyone so opposed to the comma?

The hyphen isn't too bad, though, I don't really like the compound word or the acronym.

It is hard to say out loud quickly (Sleep Sweet is a tongue twisting phrase). If you're going to have that indy/shoegazer sound, I think the name would be appropriate.

The name would be appropriate for melanchoy sound which is what you're going for so :up:

IMO its not catchy. I agree with evitagen that it can be hard to say quickly. Would it be possible to take out either Sleep or Sweet?

If you really like the name I saw go for it. Also get rid of the comma ;)

Everyone is opposed to the comma because when you're trying to come up with a name for a band, you're generally trying to come up with a noun! Of course, adjectives describing the noun are acceptable, but commas generally are not.

Hmm, okay. I never realized there were rules to it...

I was just trying to make it more like a sentence, but if I'm getting such a negative reaction to the comma maybe its not such a great idea. Thanks, everyone!

One of the good things about the name I said above is that Garcia Marquez based Macondo upon the town where he was born. This country is Columbia and the other girl, Juliette, visited there last year and hopes to visit again soon, she enjoyed it so much.

I want to name my band: Two Dollar Horse

either that or Crack Horse.

Usually it's a bad idea to name a band after anything "Sleep" related. In the case you get an unfavorable review, a critic might say "the aptley name Sleep ( insert your name here) will do just that, put you right to sleep". I'd tend to stay away from anything associated. Such as SleepWalking, Big Sleep, etc.

Names are all around you and they can come from just about anywhere. For example, Peter Case of the Plimsouls said his band got his name when they were sitting out in his car one when they were completely broke. When asked if it meant anything, he said "yeah it means the boat is loaded". Toad The Wet Sprocket got their name from a Monty Python sketch. Badfinger got it's name from the working title of With a Little Help From My Friends ( originally titled "Badfinger Boogie"). Sometimes you have to put alot of thought into and sometimes it will just hit you out of the blue.

My buddy is in a band. The original name for the band was "Swagg". We (his friends) all thought it was an awful name. So they changed the name to "Ride the Apocalypse".

Which means that they managed to make "Swagg" sound good.

Yeah.. Swagg sounds much better. I actually don't think its such a bad name.

Ride the Apocalypse is an awful name! Unless he's in a calypso band.. Then they can be Ride the Apocalypso.

Instead of "Sleep, Sweet Macondo," name it "Sweet Mac" or some derivation. I don't mind the comma so much as the tongue-twister.

A friend of mine has been in several bands so I asked him. Here's his response:

"Terrible--impossible to remember, which is always a bad thing for a band name."

There's a band called SWAG and they are excellent. Anyone heard that cd?

Impossible to remember? Hmm...other people I have asked - in person - have said that it is strange enough that it kind of sticks with them. I guess its relative.

Does anyone like the name Aquahog?

Hey, it's no worse than other semi-precious "complete sentence" band names, like:

"Godspeed You Black Emperor!"
"They Might Be Giants"
"And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead"

Which is a horrible band name. Good album title, but a horrible band name.

I think "... Trail of Dead" is a great band name -- it's just so different. Maybe it works because it's easily shortened and so nobody needs to use the full name.

As for "Sleep, Sweet Macondo," I think it's a cool name. I guess the name is pretty obscure (I've read the novel, and it didn't ring a bell at all), but so are a bunch of band names.

I say, unless you're planning on making a serious career out of the band and need a catchier name (or at least one easily remembered), don't worry too much about those things.
