Rolling Stone's "Women in Rock" issue: Your thoughts?
 

I'm pretty stunned to see f'n Britney Spears front and center on Rolling Stone's "Women in Rock" issue. A) She's not "rock" and B) She's not yet a woman. According to her anyway. If this is about females on the charts then yes, I could see her being a part of this story. The inclusion of this bimbo in the roster of other artists and musicians mentioned is not only an insult to them, but those who weren't listed.

God I hate Rolling Stone. Yet another reason why I stopped reading that piece of sh*t years ago.

why pick on britney? the others on the cover are Shakira, (also not rock), Mary J Blige, (not rock), Alanis, (Maybe Rock), Avril Lavigne, (kind of rock, more like pop rock), Ashanti, (not rock)

I think its more like a women in music issue. Inside the issue it says that it is about women who Rock, and it includes Sharon osbourne, so I guess it's more about women who kick ass.

And it's all women who have been covered extensively in the recent past. At least they put Lucinda Williams in there, but towards the end.

The new Rolling Stone is schizo to me. It's definitely more trashy and aiming for brief attention spans, BUT they have actually started covering some decent bands at times. And their expanded record reviews are better than what they were doing a year ago.

The cover is hilarious! These women would not know how to "rock" if their lives depended on it...except maybe Alanis.

It seems like most females who really rock are not as well known: Kittie, The Donnas, Kim from The Muffs......

Did anyone see the cover of the Vanity Fair music issue? J-Lo is included! Like her pre-packaged mass marketed pop dookey deserves to be recognized.

Rolling Stone would be fine if they'd put the stuff they put in the back in the front and um... delete the stuff they put in the front now.

Isn't it like "Women in Rock" week every other issue with Rolling Stone? They stick the current hoochie-mama teen-pop queen in her skimpiest outfit on the cover and then throw in the obligatory half-paragraph nods to Stevie "goat-girl" Nicks, Lucinda Williams, Grace "I banged everyone . . . twice" Slick and Janis.

And as for Rolling Stone's recent "face-lift" - it's a direct steal from the British "Q" magazine, right down to the colors and fonts used.

At this point, I'd be a little embarassed to see my picture on the cover of Rolling Stone. No offense to Dr. Hook...

Has anyone seen the new cover featuring Christina? She looks like a slut as usual. I doubt she can even play that guitar :)

I don't know which Q magazine you're reading or looking at, but the one I read looks NOTHING like Q!

Also, I'd be interested in hearing which female musicians you do think rock Grunter. Compared to Britney, Alanis is Led freaking Zepplin. And regardless of whether you hate her or not, the woman, produces, writes and sings her own music. I've also seen her live once and if that wasn't rock, I don't know what is. Sure, it's no Muffs or L7, but it's definitely rock.

Jeez, you might think the people at RS don't know that women have been performing music just as long as the guys have.

If they really want a story, how about "Why we (Rolling Stone mag) Suck!"

A cool cover would have been: The Donnas, Kim Shattuck from The Muffs, Lisa Marr, Sleater-Kinney, Kim Deal, Kim Gordon, Anna Waronker and some women from the early days like Chrissie Hynde, Joan Jett and Exene Cervenka.

My thought is that--Joni Mitchell is kind of a b****, but funny in that she comes across as not really caring what anyone, including Rolling Stone Magazine, thinks of her.

The rest of it was really boring.

Just another vote for Kim from the Muffs taking over that cover.

Rock is a pretty broad term. I can see Shakira as pop/latin rock, Britney as pop rock, Alanis as alternative rock, Avril Lavigne as pop/alterative rock, etc.

Mary J. Blige and Ashanti are the ones that don't fit, even though they're probably the most talented of the bunch (though I don't like that type of music). They are clearly R&B/hip hop.

They should have just put Women of Music, Top Female Performers, or something like that on the cover and prevented this debate.

rolling stone is just trying to make money by putting talentless naked sluts in it's cover....more power to 'em....i quit reading RS about 5 years ago...i got really tired of their extreme leftist leanings...

An even better story title would have been "Women who Rock in bed!"
