Driving Songs

I need your help guys/Gals. Im trying to compile a list of some classic driving or cruising music for my upcoming 10 hour drive and I want to burn a couple CD`s with classic driving/cruising songs. Ive got a few ideas in my head, but you know hgow it is...I cant think of half the ones I want, so if you guys start listing your favorites, Im sure I will recognize the songs I like. Thanks for your help.

I like to play a lot of the older Metallica songs. Master Of Puppets is a great album to use IMO. I also like to listen to some Soilwork and Meshugguah. Andrew WK is also great.

If you're into it you can try some techno.

Catherine Wheel has a lot of great songs to crank up while you're driving:

- Backwards Guitar
- Car
- Gasoline
- Little Muscle

Radar Love by Golden Earring always makes my foot press a little harder on the gas.

Kate Bush=Running up That Hill/Love and Anger

As "rock" is invariably seen as typical "driving" music, <b>FrostyLizard</b> may also like to check out the suggestions in <b>Betho</b>'s: <A HREF="http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=168862" target="_blank">What songs would be good for a classic rock compilation?</a>

Here is a compilation tape I put together for a friend who was about to go on holiday. I'm not so sure driving was involved but, as I recall, the track selection took me some time so I thought I'd recycle it here. ;) And you might want a change of pace from time to time!

<TABLE><CAPTION ALIGN=TOP><B>90-minute compilation</B></CAPTION><TR><TD><i>Side One</i></TD><TD><i>Side Two</i></TD></TR><TR><TD>The Beatles - Here Comes the Sun</TD><TD>Marc Bolan - 20th Century Boy</TD></TR><TR><TD>The Eagles - Tequila Sunrise</TD><TD>The Clash - Should I Stay or Should I Go</TD></TR><TR><TD>Black Crowes - Thorn in My Pride</TD><TD>The Presidents of the USA - Dune Buggy</TD></TR><TR><TD>Eric Clapton - Knockin' On Heaven's Door</TD><TD>Lou Reed - Walk on the Wildside</TD></TR><TR><TD>Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama</TD><TD>Talking Heads - Once in a Lifetime</TD></TR><TR><TD>The Christians - Forgotten Town</TD><TD>The Shamen - Ebeneezer Goode</TD></TR><TR><TD>Black Grape - Shake Your Money</TD><TD>Kula Shaker - Hey Dude</TD></TR><TR><TD>Happy Mondays - Loose Fit</TD><TD>Santana - She's Not There</TD></TR><TR><TD>Spin Doctors - Jimmy Olsen Blues</TD><TD>Teardrop Explodes - Reward</TD></TR><TR><TD>The Presidents of the USA - Peaches</TD><TD>Eurythmics - Sex Crimes (1984)</TD></TR><TR><TD>The Stranglers - Peaches</TD><TD>Blondie - Atomic</TD></TR><TR><TD></TD><TD>David Bowie - Sound & Vision</TD></TR></TABLE>

When a pal asked a similar question on Usenet a while ago - my suggestion was the above compilation - here is what people said. I turned the first set (all from one guy) into a table:

<table border="1" cellpadding="1" cellspacing="1" align="left"><tr><td><b>Van Halen</b></td><td>Mean Streets</td><td>Take your Whiskey home</td><td>Romeo's Delight</td></tr><tr><td><b>Black Sabbath</b></td><td>Supernaut</td><td>National Acrobat</td><td>After Forever</td></tr><tr><td><b>Thin Lizzy</b></td><td>Warrior</td><td>Gotta Leave This town</td><td>Chinatown</td></tr><tr><td><b>Kings X</b></td><td>Dogman</td><td>Groove Machine</td><td>Cigarettes</td></tr><tr><td><b>Riot</b></td><td>Fire Down Under</td><td>Outlaw</td><td>Altar of the King</td></tr><tr><td><b>Black Sabbath</b></td><td>Turn up the Night</td><td>Falling off the Edge of the World</td><td>Die Young</td></tr><tr><td><b>Corrosion Of Conformity</b></td><td>Clean My Wounds</td><td>Clean My Wounds</td><td>Long Whip</td></tr><tr><td><b>AC/DC</b></td><td>Riff Raff</td><td>Down Payment Blues</td><td>Overdose</td></tr></table>&nbsp &nbsp
&nbsp
&nbsp
&nbsp
&nbsp
&nbsp
&nbsp
&nbsp
&nbsp
&nbsp
&nbsp
&nbsp
And here was another individual compilation:

Hole In The Sky (Black Sabbath)
Strutter (Kiss)
Symptom Of The Universe (BlackSabbath)
Echoes (Pink Floyd)
Megalomania (Black Sabbath)
Built For Speed (Motorhead)
Side 2 of MOR (Black Sabbath)
I Am The World (Mortiis)
Sabbra Cadabra Live (Black Sabbath)
Eating Ice Cream With The Devil (Supernaut)

And another!

Kill the King (Rainbow)
Save Yourself (MSG)
You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget (YM)
Dangerous Tonight (Alice Cooper)
The Same Thrill (Scorps)
Rock "N" Roll (Motorhead)
Crash Dive (Saxon)
Hall Of The Mountain King (Savatage)
Problem Child (AC/DC)
Headed For Nowhere (Triumph, w/ Morse and Emmet dualing)

And this was a bunch of stuff various people suggested:

AC/DC - Back In Black (ALBUM)
Saxon - Northern Lady

Thanks for all the suggestions....I love the one song "rader Love" as I had forgotten about that one, and I thought of a good Sammy Hagar tune " I cant Drive 55". Im looking for more classic tunes I guess. I checked out the classic rock compilation as suggested by Benedict and also picked up Bob Segar-Ramblin Gamblin Man,Black Beatty-Ram Jam,Free-Alright Now,Queen-Bohemian Rhapsody,The Cars- Just What I needed, and Donovan- Mellow Yellow.....and Im still looking. Any more suggestions would be appreciated.I know there are some older classic tunes out there I just have not seen yet.

monkeyboy 10-12-02 03:21 PM

well, it may not be a 'classic' driving song, but i always thought 'something wicked this way comes', from the lost highway soundtrack, was a great roadtrip song.

FrostyLizard 10-12-02 10:36 PM

Also picked up The Cars- Just what I needed,Jackson Browne-Running On Empty and The Eagles- The Long Run. Still looking , so keep those suggestions coming!!

milo bloom 10-12-02 10:44 PM

This one's out of left field compared to some of the others here, but I absolutely love the Mortal Kombat soundtrack for driving.

And not sure why, but the X-Files Fight the Future soundtrack is another favorite of ours for car trips.

tofu 10-12-02 11:51 PM

Laertes 10-13-02 07:12 AM

Springsteen

How can you think about driving, and talk about classic rock without mentioning Springsteen? Half of his catalogue is about cars and driving....

I'd throw at least one of these (if you like Springsteen):

Nebraska
Pink Cadillac
Born to Run
Thunder Road
Badlands

Tyler_Durden 10-13-02 09:26 AM

Come on... no one's suggested The Allmans yet? Unbelievable! Here are some of my favorite "on the road" songs. It is my opinion that new songs just don't cut it in terms of "highway listening".

AC/DC - Gone Shootin'
AC/DC - Highway To Hell
Allman Brothers Band, The - Jessica
Allman Brothers Band, The - Midnight Rider
Allman Brothers Band, The - Ramblin' Man
Band, The - The Weight
Big Brother & The Holding Company - Combination Of The Two
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Fortunate Son
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Lookin' Out My Back Door
Doors, The - Break On Through (To The Other Side)
Dylan, Bob - Highway 61 Revisited
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama
McGuinn, Roger - It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)
Thorogood, George - Bad To The Bone
Steppenwolf - Born To Be Wild
Steppenwolf - The Pusher
Three Dog Night - Mama Told Me Not To Come

FrostyLizard 10-14-02 12:07 AM

This is great, keep em coming. Ive added some Springsteen tunes( Thanks Laertes) Steppenwolf & Lynard Skynard( Thanks Tyler-Durden) a David Bowie tune, Donovans Mellow Yellow,Bye Bye Miss American Pie and a few others....working on a second disc now with 4 days to go before I leave!!

Todd Gaines 10-14-02 12:38 PM

Not everyone's cup of tea, but The Eagles Greatest Hits CD is a great driving album. Pink Floyd's The Wall is also good. I've also found Tool's Aenima is great to play while playing video games where driving is involved (i.e. Gran Turismo, Road Rash, etc.) What does everyone else think?

seeyouauntie 10-14-02 01:26 PM

There is only one song you need: "It's Raining Men". Just play it over and over with the windows down and the stereo cranked up!

Snowmaker 10-14-02 03:17 PM

Bad Habit - Offspring

I remember a similar thread where I suggested "La Woman". Great driving song.

Of course, I like your other choices as well. I would pick Karma Police for Radio head (goes with the video) and anything by Bjork. I would like to warn anyone not to listen to Vespertine at ngiht or anytime while sleepy. The dreamyness of the album might make you pass out at the wheel.
