Wow...I agree with you on a lot. NYC is awful to see live bands. I remember going to the Limelight/Roseland/Ritz (which was the old Studio 54) etc. The Ritz was okay and had tons of fun at L'Amours, but some of the other small venues are terrible. The crowds were just like you described, the bands thought they had to act the part and when you get right down to it (as a rock fan) NYC is not a 'rock' city.
