LIVE PHISH 13-16 OUT ON OCTOBER 29 -- THE HALLOWEEN SHOWS ARE
UNLEASHED
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PHISH will release the next four volumes of their LIVE PHISH series on
October 29. "Live Phish", Volumes 13-16 will feature four of their
legendary Halloween concerts. At each of these four shows, the band
donned a "musical costume," covering a classic album as the middle set
of a three-set show. The shows, from 1994, 1995, 1996, and 1998,
feature Phish covering The Beatles' "White Album", The Who's
"Quadrophenia", Talking Heads' "Remain in Light", and The Velvet
Underground's "Loaded" respectively. Each release is a 4-disc set --
the 1998 release includes a bonus disc featuring material from the
previous evening.
Phish Dry Goods is now taking preorders for Volumes 13-16. We plan to
begin shipping mid-October and orders should arrive at your door
before they go on sale in stores on October 29. Although we cannot
guarantee delivery before the release date, we will do everything
possible to get orders to people before then. Also available is a new
batch of Live Phish merch, including a new limited edition Pollock
poster and a reprint of Pollock's classic 1995 Halloween poster. To
place a preorder click here:
http://www.phish.com/drygoods/home/c...y.html?cid=19.
CONTEST ALERT: Preorder ALL four LIVE PHISH releases and be eligible
to be one of FOUR winners who'll receive two tickets to the Phish
KICK ASS!!
I know where I'll be spending New Year's Eve now.
grunter does the happy-happy, end-of-hiatus dance
mkdevo 08-14-02 01:57 PM
i'll be booking my hampton hotels this week..
talk about back with a vengeance!!!
Gdrlv 08-14-02 03:19 PM
Good Lord, yes!!! Guess I know where NYE will be spent this year...
Gdrlv 08-14-02 03:36 PM
Alright...sitting here thinking about this (not much more work getting done today). Some advice needed...one night at MSG or three nights at Hampton...which should I do? Definitely can't do both MSG and Hampton. I'd love to see three shows, but I also want to be there when that first note of music is played. Decisions, decisions.
I'd go for MSG over Hampton. I've been to both in the past and, while Hapton definitely has a special feel, MSG on New Year's Eve is insane :D. I'm so glad I don't have to try and figure out what to do on NYE again this year, parties with 50 people aren't the same as being with thousands of your friends ;).
Yeah, I'm definitely leaning heavily towards NYE (although I'm also toying with the idea of just working through Christmas and trying to do all 4). Never been to Hampton, but I have been able to experience the insanity of a NYE show and don't think 3 nights at Hampton could possibly top it. Now comes the hard part...getting a ticket.
A bit off topic, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggested Phish albums/songs? I always wanted to check the band out, but there's so much stuff out there, and I'm not sure where to begin. A top 5 list of songs would be nice...but since they're a jamband, I guess they have several versions of their songs.
mkdevo 08-15-02 11:34 AM
this will be the first NYE that i've left the house since Big Cypress!
all hotels in hampton were booked by 6pm EST yesterday. got an Econo Lodge ~7 miles away in Norfolk..
i think calling an opener would be nearly impossible, but here's the 2 i've been kicking around:
Harpua
The Boys Are Back In Town
anyone else have any picks?
over 2 years between my 79th and 80th shows... finally!!!
I really, really hope its not "The Boys Are Back in Town".
I hope they open with a Mike's Groove or "DWD".
I think they'll open with "Chalkdust" or "Wilson".
Hope to get a full TMWSIY second set on NYE (although opening with "Wilson" would pretty much kill that one). They've gotta do it one more time sometime, right?
If they play "Harpua," I think it'll be late 3rd set or encore on NYE.
For a newbie I'd say go with any of the more recent studio discs... "Farmhouse" or "Story of the Ghost"... These will give you a good introduction to their style in a shorter, more tightly written (and better produced) structure. From there, if you like what you hear, come to a show and enjoy yourself.
Opener - Bathtub Gin.
Edit - On second thought, make that opener Punch You In The Eye.
Sounds good to me... :)
Gdrlv 08-16-02 12:15 AM
Story of the Ghost is actually my least favorite Phish studio disc. I love the songs live, but the production on the disc just doesn't work for me. "Moma Dance" in particular. It's one of my favorite songs to hear live, but I really don't like the album version at all. As for studio discs, I'd recommend "Farmhouse" or "Billy Breathes" if you want Phish at their most accessible. For live stuff, I'd say start with Live Phish 06 (really fun show, especially set II), Live Phish 07, or A Live One.
"Punch You in the Eye" would be a great opener. For some reason, I'm thinking it'll be "Chalkdust" though. Whatever it is, it'll be so good to be back. :D
Kevin H 08-16-02 09:07 AM
My two favorite studio albums are Junta and Lawnboy.
Junta is one that I usually reccomend to people when they want to get into Phish. It has some good jams but nothing that's really that far out there. I'm surprised no one mentioned A Picture of Nectar yet, I think that one is probably the most accessible out of all there studio albums.
As for the opener I think a nice, jammed out 2001 would be great (since they missed NYE 2001) but I don't really see it happening. They'll probably pull out something like Foreplay/Longtime - then again it'll probably be something that no one ever thought of :p.
grunter 08-16-02 10:33 AM
To hook a newbie, I'd recommend the live version of "The Squirming Coil" from the "Live One" album. Page's piano outro is just undeniably brilliant.
But just about any of the "big" jams would be a fine introduction. "Divided Sky," "Mike's Song," "REBA," "Wilson," (hell any Gamehendge material), "You Enjoy Myself (YEM)," "Stash," "Weekapaug Groove," "Wolfman's Brother," or one of my favorite covers "Loving Cup" (which isn't exactly a big "jam" - but it just makes my heart soar)
The list could just go on and on and on . . .
Damn, I want to see them -- right this instant!
grunter 08-16-02 10:35 AM
Incidentally - has anyone had any dealings with this Phish-managed online ticketing service? Can it handle the inevitably huuuuuuugggge surge of hits that will happen when those hiatus-ending tickets go on sale?
Is this the wave of the future then? Will we no longer have our Doniac Schvice in the mail with the handy-dandy mail-order form? Has anyone received a Doniac Schvice in, like, forever?
Must we sad, pathetic dial-up users be penalized in the online ticket lottery?
I've used the online service for the last two Trey tours, and it worked fine. Then again, the demand is so much higher this time. Makes me nervous...these shows will definitely be some of the toughest tickets of the year. Chances are low for getting mail order, me thinks. Having dial-up shouldn't hurt your chances. They say that no matter when the order is placed, all requests get an equal chance. Pretty sure you'll have a better chance at tickets if you only go for one or two of the shows.
mkdevo 08-16-02 11:38 AM
it will be interesting to see how this new 'mail order' works out. personally, i don't like it. i like the extra effort involved in going to get money orders for each show, filling them all out, etc. there's really no extra effort involved in the online TBM, so there will be a LOT more people doing it.
i've never been denied mail order before. in fact, i've never even been denied tapers tickets (79 shows, incl. 2 straight full summer tours).. hope that trend continues...
True, it will let more people try to mail order but it also makes it a lot easier for them to process the orders. In the past they had to make sure all the rules were followed (right size envelope, right type of MO, shows written on MO and outside of envelope etc.) and even then they sent out tickets to people who screwed up (just moved them to the end of the line). Now all they have to do is run a program that'll pick people at random and charge their cards.
Same here, I've mail ordered for over 100 shows and have never been denied (and very rarely got crappy seats). The Fedex guy actually thought I was getting drugs in the mail because I "always looked so happy when I got those packages from Vermont" (he was a little odd) :lol:.
Bust 08-20-02 07:47 PM
tix or no tix, I'll be at MSG on NYE!!!
