Spears Abruptly Walks Off Mexico Stage, Ending Tour
Mon Jul 29, 2:00 PM ET

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Britney Spears ended her world tour on a controversial note by cutting short her final show in Mexico City on Sunday night, adding insult to injury after she made an obscene gesture upon arrival here last week.

The 20-year-old pop princess sang four songs in the last show of her Pepsi-sponsored world tour, but during the set's fifth song, "Stronger," Spears apologized, saying "I'm sorry Mexico. I love you. Bye," and left the stage, Mexico City daily Milenio reported.

Boos and jeers rained down on the stage when a public announcement asked fans to leave the Foro Sol stadium. Some concert-goers began throwing pop diva paraphernalia and chanting "fraud, fraud," the newspaper reported.

Concert organizers could not be reached for comment, and it was not immediately clear if another show would be rescheduled or if fans would receive a refund. Mexico City was the last leg of a so-called world tour in the United States and Canada.

Spears, who rocketed to fame with her 1998 hit "Baby, one more time," spent less than a week in Mexico City, but attracted plenty of attention during her visit.

The pop star was caught by cameras extending her middle finger in a universally recognized insult after she arrived last Tuesday night at an airport in Toluca, some 40 miles from Mexico City.

Spears later said the gesture was an angry response to paparazzi, who she said nearly caused a wreck with her vehicle.

She's had her 15 minutes of fame and then some, time to say bye bye for good. Let the other young female singers who don't lip sync have a chance now. Chris

I dont recall her ever going off stage in the middle of a show, and people chanting fraud" but then again, nobody probably thought that 18 yrs after "like a virgin" that she would still be famous and still be making music after all these years..

What's funny to me is the people shouting "fraud" paid good money to see a fraud.

And please...Madonna is no comparison to Spears. Madonna has always written the majority of her stuff & her music has always been at least catchy. Spears can't write lyrics or music to save her life & has to lip-sych at her concerts.

The best thing she has contributed to popular culture is those low rider hip hugging pants!

do a search, they were reported on the forum with a lot of noise. the one she tells off the camera guy is she's just resting on the beach and the guy is just annoying the hell out of her. standing there having the camera roll. her friends tell him to leave them alone and then as they are walking away she says "Why don't you get a F$#$'n Life" or something along those lines and all the guy says is. "What did you say".

the time she left the stage the power went out. it's not like she could do much considering her voice helper wouldn't work.

I can't figure this one out. I mean, why piss off all those Mexicans? They spend a year's salary on tickets and a t-shirt, you'd think they could have just put a blonde wig on one of those hot back-up singers and just kept the record playing.

Who would have noticed?

Gee, I couldn't see this one coming.

This is the inevitable result of basing your career on plastique.

Unless you're Madonna, of course, and are in league with the powers of Hell.

Wow! Does she really lip-sync at shows? That's pathetic, if true.

Perhaps her next album will be hard rock to go along with the attitude. Then again, just join up with Axl Rose.

I sympathize with her... I mean, you have to... at least a little. She probably grew up with dreams of being famous like everyone else... and she may have started out with delusions of being able to maintain her integrity... but she just made so many compromises along the way... and now she's not even a person anymore, just a marketing tool. She probably just got fed up in Mexico and said to hell with it. I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if she hated what she's become... but how can she stop it? She's OWNED by corporate America now, and while she's got more money than anyone would need in one lifetime... well, it's cliche, but it's true... she can't buy back her happiness or her integrity. So she's ****ed. I'm not defending what she did or defending her as an artist, because she's not an artist... she's a performer, and she should've performed that whole show like she gets paid to do. I just think it's really sad. Whether she gets back on a successful path or not, she's emotionally ****ed for life.

Oh, stop, you're gonna make me bust out crying. I especially liked the bit about "she may have started out with delusions of being able to maintain her integrity"...

This is Britney we're talking about, right? Mickey Mouse Club Britney? Catholic Schoolgirl Slut Britney? "Hit me baby 1 more time" Britney? "I'm a good virgin and sober" Britney?

Can we start taking up a much-needed collection for Ms. Spears? We'll send her to Tibet and she'll return as a revitalized, essential musical artist.

Whatever... laugh... her music is manufactured pop crap. I can't stand it, and I hate her blatant commercialism. But come on... you think the Mickey Mouse Club is sacrificing integrity? It's what most people would call a great gig for a little kid who wants to be in showbusiness. As for the Catholic Schoolgirl thing... it was just an idea that apparently she had for that video... and at the time she wasn't even a blip on the radar. If the tune hadn't blown up so big, nobody would even be talking about her. And I doubt she's made many music decisions since that time because her label OWNS her. I know there are far sadder things in the world, many, many, many of them. But if you don't think it's the slightest bit sad to see someone who just wanted to sing and dance turned into a cashcow for a record label and corporations at the expense of her own self... I dunno... Plenty of stars have self-destructed, and this is why... fame is unpredictable. Nobody really understands what they're getting into when they decide they want to be an entertainer. Does anyone agree with me? At all?

Well, I'll concede to one point we can perhaps agree on.

She is a pawn in a game with a strong likelihood of 'no awareness.'

But that doesn't make me feel bad for her. It makes me feel bad for the hundreds of thousands of young women who swallowed the lies told through her.
