Favorite b-sides
Alright, I know the term "b-side" is probably a bit outdated, seeing as how 45's and cassette singles are no longer in the picture, but I think you know what I mean (I believe a majority of "b-sides" may now be CD bonus tracks). So, what's everyone's favorite b-side?
Off the top of my head, here's mine ('cause I love making stupid lists): Beatles - "I'm Down", "Rain", "Revolution", "Old Brown Shoe" The Who - "Heaven and Hell", "Pure and Easy" Rolling Stones - "Who's Driving Your Plane?", "Child of the Moon" Kinks - "I'm Not Like Everybody Else", "Mindless Child of Motherhood", "This is Where I Belong" Clash - "The Prisoner", "1977" The Jam - "See-Saw", "The Butterfly Collector" ABBA - "Should I Laugh or Cry" Jimi Hendrix - "The Stars that Play with Laughing Sam's Dice" Sleater-Kinney - "By the Time You're 25" Weezer - "I Just Threw Out the Love of My Dreams", "Starlight" Metallica - "Breadfan" Bjork - "Scary", "Sod Off" Juliana Hatfield - "Hello My Name is Baby" Elvis Costello - "Big Tears", "Girls Talk" Liz Phair - "Easy" Pixies - "Bailey's Walk", "In Heaven" 10,000 Maniacs - "Everyday is Like Sunday" The Band - "Get Up, Jake" Sly and the Family Stone - "Everybody is a Star" David Bowie - "Bombers" Elton John - "Into the Old Man's Shoes" Blondie - "Poets Problem", "Susie and Jeffrey" Go-Go's - "Speeding" Love - "Laughing Stock" Smashing Pumpkins - "Pennies", "Starla" Bruce Springsteen - "Pink Cadillac" |
This will be an ongoing list but here are some off the top of my head:
Dubstar "I lost a friend" Travis "21" "Central Station" Oasis "Just Getting Older" Pulp "Forever in My Dreams" Coldplay "Help is Round the Corner" Mansun "I've Seen the Top of the Mountain" London Suede "Europe is Our Playground" Super Furry Animals "The Roman Road" |
Fleetwood Mac - Silver Springs
|
Police "Murder by Numbers"
Laurie Anderson "Walk the Dog" New Order "In a Lonely Place" New Order "Lonesome Tonight" Prince "Erotic City" Dream Syndicate "Let It Rain" Man, I have to REALLY search back in my mind here! If I went and looked at my CD collection I'm sure I could come up with some more. Good topic! |
The holy grail of Heavy Metal/Hard Rock B-Sides:
"You Said It All" Ozzy Osbourne/Randy Rhoads - live (never recorded in the studio) Another great one: "One Up The B-Side" Ozzy Osbourne/Jake E. Lee (better than most of the songs that made it on Bark At The Moon). (I've played 'em both on my show because they're so damn hard to find...) "You Said It All" was SUPPOSED to have been included with the recent "remaster" of Blizzard Of Ozz, but they dropped it. Probably because they didn't have the multi-track tapes and couldn't replace Bob Daisley & Lee Kerslake's tracks (which they did out of spite on the "remasters" of Blizzard & Diary Of A Madman). |
Duran Duran - "Secret Oktober"
Completely unlike what the band was doing at the time. |

Velvet Underground's "Foggy Notion" is my favorite song from them. Funny it was a b-side.

Most of Garbages are good. hope they do the compilation cd that's rumored to be in the works
I can't think of any other songs that I know for a fact are B-sides |
U2 has so many good b-sides that they put many of their album track to shame:
- Dancing Barefoot - Everlasting Love - Salome (the best U2 b-side ever!) - Lady With The Spinning Head - Night And Day (the 2nd best U2 b-side ever!) - Paint It Black - I've Got You Under My Skin w/Frank Sinatra |
Led Zeppelin "Hey Hey What Can I Do"
Fleetwood Mac "Silver Springs" |
Ben Folds - Hiro's Song
Ben Folds - One Down Radiohead - Maquiladora Pearl Jam - I got ID |
Just about the entire b-sides collection from The Cure: Staring at the Sea - The Singles is awesome. Too bad the b-sides were only released in the cassette format, though. :(

Oasis- Acquiesce (these guys are loaded with good b-sides) Pearl Jam- Yellow Ledbetter RHCP- Soul to Squeeze Led Zeppelin- Hey, Hey What Can I Do (worth the repeat mention) The Clash- Gates of the West |
A select few off the top of my head :
Suede - Whipsnade, W.S.D, Asdatown, (just about everyone of their b-sides are wonderful, IMO) Pulp - Ansaphone Mansun - K.I.Double.S.I.N.G Radiohead - Bishop's Robe Ed Harcourt - Sleepyhead |
Iron Maiden put out some really cool b-sides. One of favorites was the cover song "King of Twilight"
|
Van Halen - "Crossing Over" (GREAT track that's only on a Balance-era CD single)
DJ Shadow - "Dark Days Theme (Spoken For Mix)" ...and there are some very cool remixes on the singles from UNKLE's Psyence Fiction album. |
