Today's CDs (6/10)
After a spending diet of about 2 months I binged yesterday:
Christina Rosenvinge — Frozen Pool
Bantam Rooster — Deal Me In
Dan Melchior's Broke Revue — Heavy Dirt
Joy Division — Unknown Pleasures
Lord High Fixers — Is Your Club a Secret Weapon?...
Various Artists — Sympathetic Sounds of Detroit
Tearjerkers — Bad Mood Rising
20 Miles — I'm a Lucky Guy
A question:
Anyone have any words, good or bad, about "!!!"?
They're playing Thursday and I'm looking for some more info in addition to their small write up in the Chicago Reader (inputing their name into a search engine is a lost cause).

Oxes -- Oxxxes
Calla -- Custom
Calla -- Calla
Wedding Present -- Seamonsters
Interpol -- Interpol
!!! is good except for the vocals. The backing music is decent Afrobeat-influenced funk, but the vocals are straight indie rock. I generally find that when I listen to the record I enjoy it up until the vocals. Live they can be excellent though.

Q of the D:
I agree 100% with Yancey. !!! is a great, fun live band, but the vocals aren't the greatest. I caught them a few months ago with Les Savy Fav at the Empty Bottle - expect the singer to do lots of bumping and grinding with the audience. I haven't heard any of their recorded material.
In the CD Changer:
Silkworm - "Italian Platinum"
Neil Young - "Live Rust"
Archers of Loaf - "Icky Mettle"
Afghan Whigs - "Black Love"

Talking Heads - Sand in the Vaseline, Disc 2 (later stuff)
Ben Folds - Rockin' the Suburbs
Starbucks' Mas Cafe Cubana (I know, I know, it's a corporately-labeled CD, but it turned me on to the Afro-Cuban All Stars, so it can't be all bad, can it?)
Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 ("New World")
Connells - One Simple Word
Billy Bragg & Wilco - Mermaid Avenue

Thanks for the opinions guys. I've got some down time this week and if nothing else comes up I'll check them out.
Also:
just listened to The Mooney Suzuki (Electric Sweat) and I agree with your sentiments from a week or so ago Yancey. It's a bit bland and smells of posing. Guess not everything that comes out of Ghetto Recorders can be good.

Anyway, here's what's on my plate...
Michael Franti & Spearhead: Stay Human
Robert Randolph & the Family Band: Live at Wetlands (cannot get this one out of my changer)
Quannum Spectrum
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion: Extra Width
Disco Biscuits: They Missed the Perfume

A quick note to say that the new Hot Snakes album arrived here at my desk today. Damn, this album is smoking. It's looking like this may end up in my year-end Top Ten.
