How long do cd's last?

Somebody told me that cd's will last only about 10 years because the aluminum coating will deteriorate. Is that true, or do cd's last longer than that if you take care of them.

Without getting into the whole "rot" thing, I have CDs that I've owned for 15 years that are still in perfect condition. Never had one "rot" on me yet, and I own about 600.

I haven't had any "rot" on me yet. A few that I purchased when the format was introduced almost twenty years ago (ie... Madonna: Like a Virgin) still play fine. I have around 750 CD's.

Okay, thanks guys.

I have about 650 in my collection, some of which date back to 1990+/- with no problems at all.

I have had at least one (a Funkadelic 'greatest hits') rot on me.

Not all CDs are created equal. The vast majority though are fine.

Same here. I've have around 6000 & none that I know of have rot. I've had some since '85.

I had heard years ago that some Canadian made cds had problems with rotting.
