What's up with this Parental Advisory?
 

Since when does someone have to show id in order to buy the latest eminem cd in a store? It's not like music fans are buying cigarettes here. Jeez talk about the lack of freedom of speech. Are stores made to enforce this 18 or older rule, or are the employees a bunch of jerk offs? The rules make no sense because you can get into the most violent or sexual movies at 17 and xxx rated at 18, but in order to buy a cd you have to be 18? I don't think these rules make any sense at all and are an offence to right of freedom of speech.

Re: Parental Advisory. Is it true that Frank Zappa has the only INSTRUMENTAL album with an "explicit lyrics" warning sticker? hehehe. Saw that claim on a VH1 special.

I donno if it's freedom of speech: they have the right to say it, you just dont have the right to hear it. I think it's stupid too.

is it all stores or just one. you can buy any other type of pa cd just like that no matter if you are 5 or 99.

i just got back from record and tape traders, and it seems like it is just one or two stores with this rule.

in my experience it has been up to the mgmt to make the choice. some companies follow this procedure as well.

oh and 18 is ridiculous, but I wouldn't seel Eminem to a 12 year old.

So is it the law for them to sell them to people 18 or older or just a store policy. For example, if a store sells eminems new cd to a 10 year old will the store worker go to jail or something? I'm really confused about the legal aspect of this mess.

I doubt it, unless a parent becoms invovled. A manager at a Best Buy tells me of this woman who periodically will send her kid into the store to buy one of these stickered cd's. The kid is seven yrs old. Anyway, the kid will go to his mom, who by the way is waiting in the parking lot, and give her the cd & receipt. Then she will come in with her kids in tow and scream at the manager on duty and demand that someone be responsible for this.

Personally, I think she's a nut. But the manager told me that retailers don't give those stickers much attention and that they are for parents to know what their kids are listening to.

Two quick points. Have you noticed that movies don't come with these stickers? And since you mentioned Tipper Gore, she was the deciding factor for why I voted for George W instead of her husband. Can't have a prude like her running the country.

I don't think they have to enforce it. The local National Record Mart (they just went out of business) use to not sell them to you if you were not 16. Disc Jockey which is now FYE wouldn't sell the Eminem to a 13 year old dude in front of me in line, which I think is good IMO. The checkout lady said he had to be 18 I believe.

I don't see the difference in this and rating movies. I just think that they should then come up with a better system. Like don't slap it on the CD just because they say the "F" word once when in PG-13 movies you can do that and show teens drinking and smoking, etc.

Sucks if you're under 18 I guess.

As a parent, I appreciate the fact that I still have a minimal amount of control over what my kids can and can't buy.

Every place is carding for this CD,my freind is 28 years old has a 9 year old kid with him and a 6 year old,he has a beard and they carded him at his local Target,but my brother who is 15 buys beer and smokes at local stores.

It's a store-by-store basis. Some have a big 18 sticker and some do not.

There is no law that has to be enforced on it.

The only time it becomes a problem is when little Timmy in fifth grade blares Eminem or Marilyn Manson on his stereo for the whole house to hear.

Then Mom makes a trip to Sam Goody or wherever with the devil music in hand.

I was in a store once when an angry parent brought something back and it was hilarious.

These parents are clueless.

I think a parental advisory on the CD is a good thing. Why would you want to hear underage kids swearing and cussing? I know a lot of very young teenagers that swear like crazy 'cause they learn them from the music they listen to. Hearing kids swear disgusts me.

when I was a little kid, I swore like a sailor (as did my friends) and, trust me, it was NOT from the music I listened to. I'd never listened to anything with such harsh language. I'd never really seen movies with lots of cussing, either. Kids have ears and parents often let a word slip infront of the kids. Take this fact, multiply it by about 50 kids in a 4th grade class, and you have atleast 50 swear words floating around. It doesn't take long for kids to build up a nice vocabulary. In my case, I and most of my friends knew most of the "bad" words before we'd seen our first R movie.

Don't be so fast to blame music, TV, video games, movie, etc, for the stuff kids do. DO be so fast to look at the parents and other people the kids encounter in every-day life.

Yeah, once in a while the manager has let me know at Circuit City that we are not allowed to sell PA marked CDs (or R rated movies / M games) to people under 18... and I've carded 2 or 3 people, and actually turned back one. Then again, I probably bought these things at least 20 different times before I was 18, and I never had anyone ask (this included many times at Circuit Citys)... so whatever.

Technically though, employees pretty much everywhere are SUPPOSED to only sell them to people 18 and up, but whether or not this actually happens really, really varies.

Agree with that too. That's why kids are swearing because their parents are not doing anything about it. It disgusts other people when little kids swear. Yes, I know that music is not the only thing they learn the swear words from. They also learn the swear words from movies, from their own parents and other people.

I hate people who ask for id. Im 20 and if they ask then i find it pretty insulting. They always act like such a-holes too. Ah screw it the system sux, im moving to amsterdam :) .

they learn the swearing from their parents (watch the opening scene in jay and silent bob for proof) and the kids in school.

We don't sell CDs but I know we can't (from a company standpoint, not store by store basis) sell video games rated Mature to anyone under 18 and we have to warn parents who are purchasing one for their kids about the rating and what it means. We even have convenient pamphlets.
