Hey, I love all the ladies you mentioned (esp. Suzanne, Kirsty, and Kim), but damn Subba, I had to narrow it down! ;) At any rate, good call on Billie Holliday. Don't know how I forgot her in my original post.

Oh wait a second, I can't stand Cat Power. But that David Bowie is a nice lady...

Great thread, thanks for the bump. I've always had a bias for the female voice for some reason so I've got most of the names mentioned so far on CD.

Some great voices that have been overlooked:
Martha Davis (The Motels)
Susanna Hoffs (The Bangles)
Belinda Carlisle (The Go Go's)
Angie Hart (Frente!)
Lisa Germano
Alison Moorer
Shelby Lynne
Sara Evans
Joss Stone
Dolly Parton
Bernadette Peters
Madeleine Peyroux
Joanna Newsom

My personal favorites- already mentioned here but deserve repeating:
Tori Amos
Bjork
Julianna Hatfield
Siouxsie Sioux
PJ Harvey
Kristen Hersh
Elisabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins)

Michael Corvin 01-23-05 05:12 PM

Just skimmed the thread but I doubt anyone has mentioned:

Astrid van der Veen from the Ambeon project by Arjen Lucassen

Album is amazing, and even more amazing that she was only 14 when it was recorded. Sound clips can be heard here.

The singer (who IIRC is Tricky's wife) is named Martina Topley-Bird. She had a debut album which was a bit abysmal, although she had a great song with Josh Homme from QotSA.

I found this thread because I searched for Madeleine Peyroux, and this came up. My vote goes to her as well. I think Tracey Thorn has an awesome song although I don't really like Everything But The Girl's music. Same goes for Tori Amos.

Cassandra Wilson has a great voice --- check her out in Don Byron's A Fine Line.

But best?

Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday. My top vote goes to Astrud Gilberto, although that is out of personal preference.

Missed this thread the first couple times. I'm one of the few that basically only enjoys music with female vocals. There are a few bands with male singers that I'll listen to, and some random songs here and there, but 95% of my CDs are bands/artists with female singers. So I have a lot of names that could go here. I'll try to keep it as short as possible.. That and I'm not really well-versed in bands/singers before the 90s. So that said...

Best:

Shirley Manson (Garbage)
Lennon Murphy (Indy artist, but utterly amazing)
Jessicka (Jack Off Jill/Scarling frontwoman)
Kelly Clarkson (Her first CD sucked bad, but I love the second and she has an amazing range)
The Corrs
Sara Evans
Dido
Aurora UK's lead singer. I don't like the song "If You Could Read My Mind" that much, by my God are her vocals on that simply incredible.
PJ Harvey
