So, is Elvis Costello any good live?

Elvis Costello is coming to Columbus on June 9th and I'm torn about whether I should buy a ticket or not. Ticket prices run between $37 and $45 before the Ticketmaster charges. I've never seen him live - does he put on a good show?

I bought "When I Was Cruel" on Tuesday and I can't stop playing it. I haven't bought any of the second wave of Rhino reissues (love the first round, though), but I think I'll go out and get "This Year's Model" today.

Also, a heads-up: EC will be on Bravo's "The Musicians" on Apr. 29 @ 10 pm. Hopefully, it will be as good as the Lou Reed episode. The site says:

Elvis Costello is considered by some to be the greatest songwriter of his generation. On Musicians, Costello recalls his days with The Attractions, collaborating with Paul McCartney and Burt Bacharach and recording his debut album "My Aim is True" in just 24 hours. Performances include "Alison," "Watching the Detectives" and "Tear Off Your Head (It's a Doll Revolution)" from his forthcoming Island Records release.

I've never seen him, but I have to think he usually does a good show. He's almost always great when he does a live performance on tv. In fact, it was a solo acoustic performance of Pads, Paws, & Claws (& the witty chat afterwards) on Letterman years ago that made me a fan. He was just on again Tuesday night doing Tear Off Your Own Head. Unfortunately, I didn't think much of it. Haven't heard the new album yet.

I don't know if I've ever heard a complete show, but I have heard random live bootleg tracks & they were mostly very good. It seems he often talks to the audience & tells stories between songs as well. I don't know how much of this he'll do in his current Rock Mode.

I've only heard good things about the man's shows. I'm irked because I just found out a few days ago he'll be in Portland May 18, and it's already sold out dammit all to heck. He's one of my musical heroes I haven't seen live yet.

Seen him twice. Once with the Attractions (around '96) and once during last year's accoustic tour with Steve Nieve.

Let's just say I've already got my tickets...
