Goth club music?
 

Well, last weekend a friend of mine took me to this gothic club and we had a great time. The music was this pulsating techno stuff that I was really liking. Can you guys and girls suggest any of this stuff as I have no ideas about who or what I was listening to.

Try "Velvet Acid Christ."

I'm not saying it's "the best" of the genre. But I think that's the direction you're probably headed in.

And they even sell it at Amazon. Imagine that.

An absolutely obligatory song is "Ophelia" by The Tear Garden.

I've never heard of a "gothic club" playing "pulsating techno stuff."

I think their all-time masterpiece is "Last Man To Fly," although I admit it's far less danceable. ;)

VNV Nation, Rammestein, and Sisters of Mercy are some of the more popular goth groups.

I think the line gets sometimes blurred between industrial and goth. I like both and though I know their distinctions, I consider them to go hand in hand. To me, industrial is just heavy, angry goth which you can dance to. For some good examples of pure goth bands, check out:

Hey grunter, you'd appreciate this. I was at a sci fi convention a couple years back, enjoying the traditional saturday night Masquerade. The announcer said something about "this next creation is called 'Gothic Star Trek'. This chick wearing a next generation lacy skirt thing in purples and blacks mosied on to the stage. Just when she got to the front of the stage I yelled "Set your phasers on ANGST!"

nice to also see your appreciation for Ka-Spel's creations Tear Garden and The Legendary Pink Dots.

LPD's discography is intimidatingly huge. Can you suggest an LP to begin with that is actually fairly available? (their distribution is terrible...) If it matters, supposedly their best selling ( :lol: ) was one called "The Maria Dimension."

I believe you can get Malochai AND the Legendary Pink Box. I found both at Amoeba in Berkeley.

You might also try Shadow Weaver.

There seems to be a fissure in the scene in the past few years.

It seems to go too ways:

Retro: being the 'old school' goth and industrial such as Sisters, Siouxsie, KMFDM, Cure, Bauhaus, Front 242 and many more that are listed here.

Darkwave: the techo stuff you were probably listening to. More dance-influenced with bands such as VNV Nation, APB and others.

I am a fan of the first cause it's what I grew up with. The other mainly sounds like the same Euro-influenced beat with different vocals over and over again. Just my opinion folks.

My advice is to check out more current stuff if you like the beats....but you cannot miss out on some of the classics as well!
