Hey! Been meaning to write you. I was pretty disappointed... just not too much there. It's perfectly servicable garage rock, but, obviously, Jack doesn't get a chance to shine. I love the last song on the comp you sent though, the name is currently escaping me.

Very true. Interesting though, in the liner notes Jack is listed as a co-writer for the last song on the album, "Time for Moon." The guitar there has a real White Stripes feel, I think.

Still looking for Jolene? I got a dirty (emphasis on dirty) little copy of it if you're interested.

I'm assuming that dirty means poor sound quality... but one of my friends got a copy. I haven't gotten it from him yet, but I will eventually. Thanks anyway though.

You ever get the Trail of Dead record?

I'll give "Time for Moon" a spin this weekend.

Nah, been too broke. But I like what I've heard, nice and noisy and disjointed. They're playing here tomorrow night. It's sold out and the Empty Bottle is not a place to go for a sold-out show. One word: suffocating.

When they start tossing their drum kit into the audience or start doing stage dives it'll be even worse. They're not too tight live, but they know how to entertain. I don't know if I've ever seen a band have more fun onstage.

I wanted to go, but I'll be out of town for a friend's wedding.

Sundog - Have you been to a sold out show at the Bottle recently? It seems like the crowds aren't quite as suffocating - I think they're doing a better job of actually counting the people on the various guest lists so they don't oversell.

Now Playing:
Bark Psychosis - "Hex" (I finally picked this up - excellent, Pikul, just excellent)
Damien Jurado - "I Break Chairs"
Les Savy Fav - "Go Forth"
Alex Chilton - "Live in London"

larryw 03-22-02 05:00 PM

I'm on a Talking Heads kick today. Last night I picked up the last two CDs of theirs that I didn't have (except for compilations etc.) - '77 and More Songs About Buildings and Food.

Talking Heads - '77
Talking Heads - More Songs About Buildings and Food
Talking Heads - Remain In Light
Talking Heads - Speaking In Tongues
The String Quartet Tribute to R.E.M. (found this last night in the used section, kinda interesting)

Three Day Delay 03-22-02 05:01 PM

I went mainstream today:

Sheryl Crow
REM- Green
Chris Isaak- Baja Sessions
Lemonheads- Best of
Wilco- Summerteeth
Dwight Yoakam- This Time

I love how all of the record collections of the "regulars" of these threads are converging. I think it's great -- and really kind of odd when you think about it.

I also bought Hex because of Pikul. A wonderful album.

I haven't been there in a while. Been going to the Beat Kitchen lately.

You know, what struck me as odd was that the Trail of Dead show has sold out in advance. Does that mean you can't get in by paying the cover? If they aren't taking cash at the door then I can see it being better controlled.

It was at the 1st of the 2 White Stripes shows last summer, we paid at the door relatively early. By the time they got on stage the place was insanely packed tight.

SubZero 03-22-02 05:37 PM

I usually reserve it for special occasions, but I broke out Depeche Mode 101 for my lengthy car ride today. Simply breathtaking....
Jon
"A brief period of rejoicing!" ;)

The Bark Psychosis purchases make me very happy. If you stumble upon copies of Independency or Game Over, their two singles collections (there is overlap, however), take the chance if you can. Most of that earlier material is less hinged but still beautiful -- even when it's at its most violent. And they were still in their teens when they recorded a lot of it!

I'm on a Talking Heads kick today.
They're one of those bands you just listen to all day, aren't they?

BenFolds 03-24-02 09:44 AM

I just listen to "rockin' the suburbs" all day.

If you don't know the song "not the same" by ben folds, you're missing out on the greatest song of all time.

I agree that "Not the Same" is a really good song. I like the way Ben Folds tells stories in his songs. It also has a good piano beat going on at times. But the song makes me far too contemplative.

Today:

The Strokes - Is This It
Charlie Hall - Porch and Alter
The Normals - A Place Where You Belong

shizawn 03-25-02 03:05 PM
