And the song of the 90's goes to....
What song lyrically and musically is the song of the 90's
Is it Smells like Teen Spirit? nope, it's none other than Bitter Sweet Symphony. Whats your choice? *Cause I'm a million different people from one day to the next* |
Hit me baby one more time :p
|
I would have to pick "Smells Like Teen Spirit"...it basically jumpstarted the '90's.

Hey Fading Soul, I don't know if you chose "Bittersweet Symphony" yourself or read that somewhere. I think there actually was some magazine that chose that song as song of the 90's. What is bizarre is that for once I totally agree with that. I'm not saying that song was the most important historically speaking, but after looking back, I think that is my fave song as well.

Guns N' Roses -- "November Rain"

Smells Like Teen Spirit just basically only caused the 90s to get foggy and rainy. A basically boring song in which I hope I ever have to hear ever again :) .
Bitter Sweet Symphony is an awesome song and I really liked how it was used at the end of Cruel Intentions. |
What did Bitter Sweet Symphony cause the 90's to do?
Smells Like Teen Spirit influenced music and fashion probably more than any other song in history. |

Smells Like Teen Spirit did not influence me at all. Did it influence music? Not any music I listen to, it was just another passing phase in music tastes. Pop went out, grunge came in, oh look pop came back. There are just endless cycles in the music world. It also did not effect the clothes on my back. Sorry that I was not a drone following Kurt Cobain. |
I would pick Teen Spirt, cause I don't think I have ever heard Bitter Sweet.

Isn't the purpose of this thread to pick a song of the 90's and not just to pick songs you like. Smells Like Teen Spirit did not influence me at all. Did it influence music? Subjectively, there could be a million different songs of the 90's. As far as songs that typify the 90's, there's Smells Like Teen Spirit and then there's everything else. Was this from a magazine? Or just an opinion... Did they pull Bitter Sweet Symphony out of the air or what? I think if another song had been mentioned in the first post, we'd be having the same exact discussion.

Here's what they said for song of the decade SONG OF THE DECADE Hands down, please. "Bitter Sweet Symphony" by The Verve takes home the prize. It's the quintessential '90s tune. It's got it all: anthemic vocals, strings, samples, and spacey guitars. Where "Smells Like Teen Spirit" bashed around haphazardly for attention, "Symphony" caught its breath, puffed out its chest, and strode proudly through the door. Take that Nirvana! |
The correct answer is: Depeche Mode - "Enjoy The Silence".

Originally posted by lordzeppelin Nice choice. I agree, but Smells like Teen Spirit would be more the "mainstream" choice. Then again, there's always Jeremy by Pearl Jam. |
Uh, "Jeremy" goes down on the BOTTOM of my list. :D

I can't believe "bitter sweet symphony" is even in the running - what the hell is that? I liked the song - the rest of the album sucked ass! If that song defined the last decade - I must have been living in the wrong decade. It was a nothing little track from a nothing little band.
Song of the 90's? IMO "Hooker with a Penis" of course, I'm biased by my Tool obssesion. |
My choices:
"Bittersweet Symphony" - The Verve "One" - U2 "Fake Plastic Trees" - Radiohead "Enjoy the Silence" - Depeche Mode |

Nirvana may have the lp of the 90's with Nevermind but I wouldn't call Teen Spirit the song of the 90's. My vote goes to Loser by Beck.
