love the Ramones, but the Ramones are as punk as i go.
can't really stand much punk outside of the ramones and mid-career Rancid (i.e. Life Won't Wait and ...And Out Come the Wolves - both of which were more punkska than punk..)

Obviously, the Ramones, but I also LOVE "Pink Flag" by Wire and "Entertainment" by Gang of Four. Amazing stuff.

How are the Descendents more punk than Blink 182? These are 2 bands clearly cut from the same cloth...only difference is that one made it big and one didn't.

The Clash
The Minutemen

I realize that the Ramones are highly regarded as "punk" but to me they're no more punk than Blink is. Lotsa pop in the Ramones -- yessirreebob.

Clash
Blink 182

The Hives are the best punk band around today, IMO.

The Clash
DKs

Jason 03-07-02 09:40 AM

The Dead Kennedys.

Yancey 03-07-02 10:06 AM

Gang of Four, hands down. One of my favorite bands of all time. Wire is also up there (sound familiar atlantamoi?). The Only Ones were great. Television and the Voidoids. Modern Lovers. Husker Du, Minutemen, Mission of Burma.

The Hives are great, but for my money the best contemporary punk band are the Hot Snakes. And Hickey, while they lasted, were great as well.

atlantamoi 03-07-02 11:39 AM

Heh heh, Yancey. You know, if there is anyone on here who has not heard Wire's "Pink Flag" you owe it to yourself to hear a very very cool CD. 1977, but in a diff league than some of the other British punk bands.

I much prefer Entertainment and even Solid Gold to Pink Flag. Pink Flag is great, but I just love the rhythm section of Gang of Four so much more.

Yancey, one thing I love about both of these bands it that the sound is taut. I mean, it's a sound I really love... something like "Cables" from Big Black. I think I actually like "Pink Flag" more judging by how I listen to it more over the years. And "Chairs Missing" is really cool. I like Radiohead, but the talk about their last two recordings being so progressive... well, people should check out "Chairs Missing" by Wire for something that was OUT there a long time ago.

"Solid Gold" from Gang of 4 is not as interesting to me. I like it, but miss the clanging guitars that they slowly weeded out.

Regardless, both of these are cool bands that still sound good to me.

Is that sarcasm? Isn't that like saying Robert Johnson isn't blues because people like Eric Clapton and Jonny Lang have changed the average person's idea of what blues is? I suppose Buzzcocks really weren't punk.
