Same could be said about a lot of the bands that headline Coachella.

Prince and Waters were AMAZING performances last year...and they definitely don't fall under the genres you listed.

To each their own, though. I skipped Depeche Mode, Rage Against the Machine, Bjork, and Red Hot Chili Peppers when they headlined.

Well Pink Floyd is quite a bit more "out there" than Sir McCartney IMO, so for me it made more sense. And Prince, well Prince completely defies any categorization!

I found the latest Fireman album to be a snoozer btw, and that's coming from a big fan of Youth's productions.

Outside the headliners I have never heard of any of those bands. Is it all hipster crap or am I that out of touch with todays music? I'm only 29.

Those three plus Morrissey, Franz Ferdinand, Fleet Foxes, Ting Tings, Black Keys and so many others and I would totally go if I was on the west coast.
I'm not saying Paul McCartney is a terrible musician. He absolutely isn't. But I'm not going to fly across the country to see him.

I know a few of them, and am "researching" the ones I have never heard of before. What do you normally listen to? I could make some recommendations based on what you normally like.

If you say country music, I would have to point you to the Stagecoach Festival lineup.

Bingo.

That, and even the non-headline acts aren't really anything to get too terribly excited about. At least, there's not enough to make up for the fact that I wouldn't be bothered with any of the three headliners AND I'd be flying across the country to go to it.

All respect to Sir McCartney [though really, I've never been a big fan of most of his solo output], but it's just not worth it.

[That said, I'm a bit disappointed I won't be dancing in the desert to Hercules and Love Affair now. *sigh*]

Funny, I couldn't disagree with you more. I love love love The Killers, they're one of the only current bands that I will buy their new album as soon as it hits shelves and four albums in (I count Sawdust even if it's a rarities collection) have yet to deliver one song I dislike. I, for one, am really happy that they are headlining on Saturday over Amy Winehouse, who Kanye West barring, is the most overhyped and overrated artist to emerge in the past five years IMO. Plus, Paul and The Cure are both great. The Cure maybe not as much in present tense, but those 80's albums still hold up well.

The Cure still put on a great live show and I loved seeing them the last time they played Coachella.

Saw them when they headlined the Sasquatch festival up here in Washington last year. Great show!

Really? I walked out halfway through that set, I thought it was a caricature of the band they once were.

I was there a couple years back and it is WAY too hot there. I waited for madonna all day and she was worth it though.

Re: Coachella 2009 (Apr 17-19)

So, who all ended up attending this?

I have to say...this may be the best of the 4 years I have attended. The big names on the lineup were not even close to the highlight of the weekend. McCartney was great, but I skipped the Killers and The Cure without a second thought.

My Favorite "perfomances":
Friendly Fires
Plump DJs
Crystal Method
Late of the Pier
Bloody Beetroots
Surkin
Drop the Lime

I was highly disappointed with the Chemical Brothers for their lackluster DJ set.

Re: Coachella 2009 (Apr 17-19)

kickin' myself for missing the Friendly Fires gig at the Black Cat. Apparently Late of the Pier at the 9:30 Club was a DJ set and not a live set, glad I didn't go to that. Chem's DJ sets are very lacklustre when compared to their 'live' sets. interestingly, Plump DJ's dj sets are better than their albums IMO.

Re: Coachella 2009 (Apr 17-19)

I think there was a separate DJ set put on by Late of the Pier in a different area/time (the Dome?).

I missed on of my tops at the show: The Presets. SOOOO Bummed I didn't see them. Heard their performance was incredible. Only because of McCartney.... sigh.

Re: Coachella 2009 (Apr 17-19)

Paul McCartney - fantastic show. Almost lost it when he was talking about Linda and John. Great showman and he played for like 3 hours.

Band of Horses - was great. Was up really close for them.

Black Keys - I just love their sound.

Jenny Lewis - fuggin' hot! Saw Jake and Reese watching her and getting pissed at the people taking pics of them.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - were great. Karen flubbed the lyrics to Gold Lion but she steadied herself all right.

Public Enemy - stuck around for about 4 songs. They were playing "It Takes a Nation..." in it's entirety.

Leonard Cohen - really really really good.

Fleet Foxes - sounded nervous and the Thievery Corporation was drowning out some of their set.

The Cure - watching them get cut off and still play about 3 songs to an audience sing along. Great Coachella moment.

Regrets - not seeing Patton and Rahzel, missing X (saw Yeah Yeah Yeahs instead), missing Booker T, sitting through TV on the Radio (better studio band).

Traffic on the 2nd day was horrid. Waited 2 hours to go 2 miles.

I watched portions of it. Redefined the word INTENSE.

They handed out earplugs on that day as you entered the festival.

I need to see them do "You Made me Realise" once in my life before I die.
