Anyone a fan of Guided by Voices?
Anyone here a fan of Guided By Voices? Thought I might start a little thread dedicated to the Dayton pop-meisters. None of that "best album poll" stuff mainly because they're put out a kajillion albums (although I would rate "Bee Thousand" and "Do The Collapse" as my personal favorites.)
Anyone else a fan? I've enjoyed them since their 1994 "Japanese Spin Cycle" Ep which was my first exposure, followed by "Bee Thousand." They've definitely gotten a lot slicker and less lo-fi with the past few albums but I'm still enjoying them; "Isolation Drills" still had a few tracks that stood with their best work. Anyway, dive in, GbV fans... |
Two of my friends are absolute GbV fans that they would traverse the US to see them play. My only claim to fame was that I saw them at the Reading Festival in 1994 - before they gotten by the GbV bug. I did make several roadtrips to see the band with them and meet Bob and the boys - much fun! My friends even went as far as to perform as a cover band, called Voided by Guises - clever, eh?

GBV are one of those bands that doesn't get much credit by the mainstream when they're around... it's not until after they're gone that everyone realizes how important they were (the Pixies, anyone?).
that said, Bob Pollard is a genius. Sure there's some filler on every GBV record, but when he hits the mark, he creates some of the best melodies I've ever heard. Under the Bushes, Under the Stars and Alien Lanes are probably my favorites. Although I love the latest stuff as well... esp. Do the Collapse. Check out Airport 5 and Robert Pollard and His Soft Rock Renegades. |
I had to ride 45 minutes to crew practice every day and my ride only listened to GbV. Very interesting..........
Name the funniest lyrics and song. |
