Wanted=Unknown Hip hop

Hey, I'm trying to find some hip hop that for the most part is not mainstream. Can anybody recommend anything? I like mostly acid jazz/hip hop and some of the stuff I listen to is Mos Def, ATCQ, Common, along those lines. I recently d/l'ed stuff from Swamburger that was awesome and Dr. Octagon (which I later found out was Kool Keith) that was awesome too.

Jurassic Park (sp), Kardinal Offical<---Kicks Ass,Pharoh Monarc all are worth looking into. I'd also recommend Dead Prez very pro black (not racist) but kinda anti establishment probably one the most overlooked albums of the year.

I've looked for mp3's of this, but haven't been successful. But everything I've bought from the 75Ark label has been good.

You are right about 75Ark. The music is 70s funk and early hip-hop with extreme Marxist lyrics. Track to check out would be "5 Million Ways to Kill a CEO."

Cannibal Ox
their debut album "The Cold Vein" is incredible.

The Coup
their latest "Party Music" is top of the line anti-establishment.

dead prez
these guys push the envelope pretty damn far and they're awesome. even if they're a little racist. (and they are)

and of course you'll never go wrong with any albums
by The Roots, especially "The Roots Come Alive" which is a concert plus some studio.

I think Q-tip is about as far away from mainstream hip hop/rap that I get too. He has done some work with De la Soul and Janet Jackson, and his debut cd is awesome.

Also, on the topic of downloading stuff...go to www.anticon.com . They have some mp3s. I don't like most of the stuff, but one song that is amazing is called Jars of Humans (I think) by Dose and Sole. Check it out.

I don't like rap that much but I love these rappers though because they have a alternative like sound to them:

Jurassic 5
Ozmalti
The Roots
and
Del the Funky Homospian

Surprised that no one's mentioned Quannum yet. Anything released by any of its members is well worth hearing. DJ Shadow, Blackalicious and Latyrx make some of the most innovative hip hop ever. In fact, the title cut from Latyrx: The Album might be the most innovative hip hop cut I've ever heard, and Endtroducing...DJ Shadow is every bit as important a disc as Straight Outta Compton or the Chronic IMHO. Quannum Spectrum (their collective album) is one of my favorites as well.

Also, Company Flow's Funcrusher Plus is a classic that I didn't see mentioned yet. It's pretty weird stuff, but really addictive.

Divine Styler, Swollen Members, the Arsonists, and Prince Paul are others worth checking out. And, as others have mentioned, you can never go wrong with Del/Hieroglyphics, Jurassic 5, the Roots, etc., etc.

You might also want to seek out some hip hop turntablists/DJs. In particular, I like Cut Chemist (Cut Chemist Meets ShortKut at the Future Primitive is a must own in my book) and Z-Trip. For a great introduction into turntablists, Bomb Hip Hop's Return of the DJ Volumes I and II are great purchases.

I have an .avi of a Quannum concert where they performed this; I couldn't believe how well they pulled it off.
