Cannibal Ox -- The Cold Vein

Best of the year, hands down.

Jay-Z - The Blueprint was easily the best rap record of the year....

It's worth searching out. Really great.

Frank TJ Mackey 12-12-01 06:59 PM

Jigga - The Blueprint
Beanie Sigel - The Reason
Nas - Stillmatic
Dungeon Family - Even In Darkness
Jadakiss - Kiss The Game Goodbye
The Coup - Party Music
Mobb Deep - Infamy
and....Ghostface Killah "Bulletproof Wallets" -- it's short with a bunch of stupid skits but the 11 or 12 actual tracks are hot!

Lousy ones -- Ruff Ryders 3 is a real piece of crap.
Wu-Tang's Iron Flag is so-so.

tsohg 12-12-01 08:57 PM

Jay-Z: The Blueprint
Outkast: Stankonia even the title kicked ***!

There hasn't been a great, and I mean truly GREAT, rap album in at least 4 years.

Word. Most have 2 or 3 good songs, and the rest is fluff.

Maybe not, but there have been many great hip-hop albums.

POWERBOMB 12-14-01 12:44 PM

There hasn't been a great rap cd since they are just throwing things together in a last minute effort to remain in the public eye. I doubt any Rap cd ends up in the top ten of 2001.

Let me be a broken record one more time -- Cannibal Ox, <i>The Cold Vein</i>. I bet it places in the top ten of the <i>Village Voice</i>'s Pazz and Jop poll (which is the best year-end list of them all). I know it ranks number two for me.

Half of Cannibal Ox is awesome; El-P really surprised me with the production (I haven't liked anything he's done before). I'm not too crazy about the MC's, though.

I'm sorry that I got in on this about 4 months too late, but I still feel the need to post my picks. I just discovered this part of the forum today. Other DVD Talkers into hip hop music, as much as I am? Damn, who would've thunk it...

2001
1. Jay-Z "The Blueprint"
2. Wu-Tang Clan "Iron Flag"
3. Ghostface Killah "Bulletproof Wallets"
4. Rza as Bobby Digital "Digital Bullet"
5. Cormega "The Realness"
6. Nas "Stillmatic"
7. D12 "Devil's Night"
8. Jay-Z "MTV Unplugged"
9. Mobb Deep "Infamy"
10. Killarmy "Fear, Love & War"

For good measure, my favorite hip hop albums from 1987-2001:
1987: Eric B & Rakim "Paid In Full"
1988: Too Short "Life Is... Too Short"
1989: Special Ed "Youngest In Charge"
1990: Brand Nubian "One For All"
1991: Ice Cube "Death Certificate"
1992: Dr. Dre "The Chronic"
1993: Wu-Tang Clan "Enter the 36 Chambers"
1994: Nas "Illmatic" (best album ever)
1995: Raekwon "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx"
1996: Jay-Z "Reasonable Doubt"
1997: Wu-Tang Clan "Wu-Tang Forever"
1998: M.O.P. "First Family 4 Life"
1999: Prince Paul "Prince Among Thieves"
2000: Ghostface Killah "Supreme Clientele"
2001: Jay-Z "The Blueprint"

Anything El-P touches is gold. Funcrusher Plus is still one of the best hip hop discs I've ever heard.

I'll reiterate:

Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein
(check out Metal Gear on The F-Word EP)
Aesop Rock - Labor Days

Yes, Jay did OK with Blueprint.

Nice list I agree, they were all great albums.

rocketsauce 04-07-02 02:45 PM

man how can you put the blueprint over jigga's unplugged album??? the blueprint was one of those albums with mad fluff on it, but unplugged was just the ish. I mean to have thet greatest hiphop band The Roots on it gives the album merit already.

planetaire 04-08-02 12:07 AM

Swollen Members "Bad Dreams". You wouldn't know these guys could lay out a rhyme to look at em. But they can, and they're Canadian to boot. Chali 2na appears on a track as well. It's on the Battleaxe Records label, they are definitely keeping it live.

the aftermath 04-08-02 09:35 AM

Dungeon Family - Even in Darkness
Killarmy - Fear, Love and War
Nas - Stillmatic
Jay-Z - Blueprint

Outkast was released in 2000

Wow, there is actually someone else out there who thinks that this album is pure brilliance. I can't say enough about Prince Among Thieves, as it really is one of the best albums I've ever heard.

However, I have to regretfully disagree with your choice for 1996...while Jay Z was good that year, nothing came close to Dr. Octagon...
