One of the most anticipated performances was the controversial duet by Garth and George. It was made controversial by accusations that Garth didn't really want to perform the duet, "Beer Run" on the show. Backstage Garth once again claimed that it was something he offered to do with George from the beginning saying that press reports don't always correspond to the truth. Both singers sang their butts off, with Brooks respectfully deferring to Jones who received two standing ovations. Afterward Garth said of appearing with Jones, "It was like sex, it was over before you knew it. You know, I realize country music gets made fun of a lot (a local sports talk show station was referring to the awards as the "Country Cletus Awards") but I have always liked the music and defended it against its detractors. A couple of those reasons were on display Wednesday night at the awards.

Country cherishes its history. That was apparent with the older stars that were brought out during the show. And also by the older style of music shown by Nickel Creek and with the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack winning a couple awards. Most "country" fans today might not care for that stuff (my mom kept grimacing when something traditional was being played and she loves pop-country acts like Lonestar :yack:), but it is the bread and butter that started this music and it's great to see it recognized.

The other thing I liked about the show is it's obviously about the music. It's not about showing up and seeing what people are wearing and having your ego boosted. Some newcomers played tiny tidbits of their music going into the commercials. You wouldn't see the newest, hottest group on MTV do that on an awards show. And the number of performers at the CMAs was amazing. They would announce somebody and I would go, "Oh, look who's presenting.." and then they would come out and actually be performing. There must have been twice the number of musical performances you get on other music awards shows. Good to see country music, even if it has gotten too "poppy" lately for my tastes, keep the emphasis on the music and not just style.

That being said, I was glad to see Keith Urban take home an award and wish Sara Evans could have won a couple more. Oh, and I would take away any award that Lonestar managed to win. Some people might call me a hypocrite because Tim McGraw may be closer to pop than traditional country, but I have always been a big fan and was glad to see him take home Entertainer of the Year. And I was very glad to see "Murder on Music Row" take home Song of the Year, especially since it was up against some of the kind of music is rips. :)

I agree wholeheartedly. I was also hoping Trisha Yearwood would pick up an award. While I think "Real Live Woman" is the better of her two most recent CDs, her voice is one of the best in country. And I like the fact that though she seemed to be toying with the MOR/Faith Hill style crossover.. she seems now to be returning to a more country, if not still mellow, style.

Nice to see Dann Huff finally win an award as well.
