Cool and Unusual Music Collaborations

Two of my all time favourite dance songs are

Don't Give up - Chicane with Bryan Adams

and

Silence - Delirium with Sarah McLachlan

they were pretty cool music collaborations

what are some of your favs ?

I also remember Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney's Say Say Say

BT is doing collaborations with alot of pop stars right now. Including Britney Spears, and that Nsync song "pop". Could be bad times coming ahead

Halo Benders immediately came to mind, but I don't know if they count since they've already done 3 albums. Calvin Johnson of Beat Happening, Dub Narcotic Sound System, K Records & Doug Martsch of Built to Spill, Treepeople. I remember hearing Canned Oxygen & On a Tip on college radio when they first came out & being totally knocked out. I knew Beat Happening but this was before I'd heard Built to Spill & I imagined it as a regular band doing a regular song with a giant floating Calvin head zooming around & interrupting. Fantastic!

Jad Fair & Daniel Johnston

William S. Burroughs & anyone

But the Halo Benders are all in the same scene and sound the same as each of their respective bands, only worse (in my opinion, but I hate Calvin Johnston).

The classic cool and unusual collaboration has to be Bing Crosby and David Bowie during Bing's Christmas special.

But as I tried to explain, just having Calvin involved in almost anything makes it "cool & unusual". Listening to those 2 totally different voices at the same time is such a schizophrenic & bizarre experience. I love it. I've only heard a couple of Dub Narcotic songs. I didn't get it & I didn't like it, but I love Beat Happening. & the first Halo Benders album (God Don't Make No Junk) is a killer. The other two took me a few listens to get into.

You could say my Daniel Johnston & Jad Fair collaboration is a bad example too because they are similar - but they are so different from everyone else.

It's an odd topic. Should it just be people about which you'd say, "well, I never thought I'd see THEM together...?" When Eno worked with David Byrne & Talking Heads, they made a lot of cool & unusual music - but it didn't seem strange that they got together...

How about John Lee Hooker & Miles Davis (along with Taj Mahal & others) working together on The Hot Spot soundtrack?

Melvins and Leif Garret covering "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

Melvins and Hank Williams III performing "Ramblin' Man" and "Okie from Muskogee."

All pretty faithful covers from the Melvins' The Crybaby.

Ween did a song with Frente that was really chill and a bit sweet, although I can't remember the name of it (it's at home).

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and R.L. Burnside aren't too mismatched but their album A Ass Pocket of Whiskey is pretty sharp.

There's more I can't recall...

I still have to pick up Sing Along with Los Straitjackets. They have some interesting guest singers, the oddest being Exene of X.
