Having 2,000 Cd's doesn't seem that weird to me to be honest. I think it's VERY strange to own that many DVD's. Or half that. Or a fourth of that. I mean, don't you listen to music over and over compared to a movie? I can probably only list 10 movies that I could watch more than 2 times. And I LOVE movies. I find it much stranger to own a lot of movies instead of renting ones that you haven't seen before. But there are plenty of CD's I like to listen to a lot. Sure, I have some music I just own to have... sort of the collectors mentality. It's my one true hobby!

Mafia81RCV 02-02-02 09:03 PM

I've got about 140 right now. I'm amazed at the collections up in the thousands.

Gdrlv 02-02-02 10:07 PM

Over 600, but not sure of the exact number.

Wormwood 02-02-02 10:12 PM

226 in 6 years.

edclem 02-02-02 10:46 PM

right around 600.
started buying cds in 1993/94

KevinSmithIsGod 02-02-02 11:34 PM

Probably somewhere around 500-600..maybe more..
I cant keep track..lol

benedict 02-03-02 05:25 AM

Long time since I counted! Probably around 400.

I started buying 11 years ago several months <i>in advance </i>of getting a CD player and associated hi-fi in the summer of 1991!

I need to get them into some kind of order again. Got to find some better storage!

POWERBOMB 02-03-02 07:03 AM

According to the cdtracker I use, 883 total. I stopped buying cd's at the emergence of DVD's. Since moving closer to my job my travel time has been reduced [was 45min now 15min]. I don't have travel time but for 2 -3 songs.

Beatlebob 02-03-02 08:11 AM

1700 titles here and still going :)

Toad 02-03-02 09:13 AM

I'm around 350 right now (since 1992), and I've slowed down considerably in the last 2 years since I started buying DVDs and because most recent music, in my opinion, is worthless.

I used to buy almost 2 or 3 per week, but I'd be surprised if I've bought 2 or 3 per year the last two years. If anything, I buy albums from older groups. And, truth by told, I probably buy considerably less due in large part to MP3s.

Why would I need to justify the number of CDs that I own? It's as simple as this: I really, really enjoy music - far more than I enjoy the DVD collecting thing, if you know what I mean. It's immensely satisfying to know that I have a better music library than most major radio stations at this point. Unlike DVDs - which I might watch once or twice a weekend - I listen to music on an almost constant basis - at home and at work.

It's funny though. Sometimes, even with all these tunes at my disposal, there are days when I feel like I've just run out of things to play. I get that music shop "twitch" where I just want to head to the local indie shop and flip idly through new discs. It's a sickness, I know. But I've adapted to it.

Burnt Alive 02-03-02 03:30 PM

I started buying CD's around 89/90 and was up to about 750 titles 2 years ago when I decided to get rid of all the CDs I'd probably never listen to again. I dropped down to about 400, but now I'm up to about 575. I was making it a point to sell an old CD every time I bought a new one (so I would have a place to store them all!), but I've laxed a bit on that now. I'm going to start going through my collection twice a year to get rid of more stuff. QUALITY, NOT QUANTITY!

CapRockBrewingCo. 02-03-02 07:35 PM

About 850-1,000. I used to work in a Music Store, & I'd guess 1/3 of them are promos.

You don't need to, I was just curious. I stopped buying so many cd's because I just couldn't justify it to myself when I have so many that don't get listened too. But then again I'm really only a casual music fan. I'm tone deaf, can't play any instruments, and can't sing so I guess having thousands of CD's sounds odd to me for some reason.

Though I'll admit that having thousands of DVD's is weirder IMO. You can listen to music all the time, while your driving, while your jogging, while your working, etc. With movies you have to invest 2 hours of your time to sit down and watch it, so if you have a 1000 dvds they'd each get played a lot less often on average than a 1000 cd's.

I have 239 CDs and 101 DVDs and I'm very happy with my collection. I can find something I want to listen, or something I feel like watching, anytime.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with owning thousands of cd's or dvd's. I was just curious and I've always been somewhat fascinated by the notion of people having such huge collections and interested in hearing them say how they justify spending all that money on them.

Same here. I received a cd player for Xmas 85 and still only have between 250-300 cd's. I listen to music all the time but I can't imagine having thousands of them.

Yancey 02-04-02 10:10 AM

I own around 1,500 CDs or something like that. I don't have enough money these days to buy too much new stuff, but I still pick up probably 5 to 10 discs a month.

This is about where I'm at too (started buying cds in 1990), though my CD buying has decreased lately because more of my money's being spent on DVDs.

GuessWho 02-04-02 11:54 AM

About 300 or so

http://mwguess.tripod.com/cdlist.htm

B5Erik 02-04-02 12:07 PM

I have about 700 CDs. (Give or take 10 or so...)

lorenzoh 02-04-02 02:28 PM

Between 300-400. Not counting the ones I burn myself.

ViewAskewbian 02-05-02 12:02 AM

Giles 02-05-02 07:57 AM

I would say probably at least 1500. Mind you I also collect UK CD Singles so..... I would actually be afraid to count them all. My big problem is space, I have so many CD's that I have had to throw away the jewel cases and start putting them in three ring binders and now with my hobby of buying DVD's the space issue is even worse.

bse 06-13-02 01:12 AM

How many cds do you own?

How many cds does everybody own?

I have 1700 cds and 200 cd-rs

and i got like 100 tapes and 100 dubbed tapes

atlantamoi 06-13-02 05:50 AM

About 2,000 discs... a few hundred LPs... a lot of tapes all of which used to be blank ;) I just moved my whole music collection to a friend's basement while we try and sell our home. Moving the CD's wasn't a big deal... the albums however were a royal pain. I wish I could make some money selling that stuff, but they aren't worth much. I used to think I had a bunch of dud compact discs until I made a killing on Ebay with some out of print garbage.

Rocky_Stallone 06-13-02 05:54 AM

Between 400-500 albums in my CD collection. I've been collection for a long time.

RaMMaR 06-13-02 06:10 AM

About 1000. i've got some of my collection catalogued on CDTracker, but i've got a ways to go....

krankins2 06-13-02 07:32 AM

About 900 now, working on putting them all into Music Collector from collectorz.com...

mdc3000 06-13-02 08:26 AM

between 450-500 actual cds, and about 200 cd-r's....

MATT

real cd's kick cd-r's ass

Gdrlv 06-13-02 09:51 AM

I've got about 700-800 cds, I'd guess and about 200 cd-r's, which are mostly (legal) live shows.

SnoopDogg 06-13-02 09:53 AM

I only have about 150. :) I am really low.

Wormwood 06-13-02 09:55 AM

As of today, 293.

SAShepherd 06-13-02 12:01 PM

300-325, maybe. Just one of 'em is a CD-R.

Copenhagen 06-13-02 12:03 PM

Somewhere around 350 I would guess.

benedict 06-13-02 01:58 PM

I was surprised when I saw my post from 8 months ago. I can't believe I ordered 121 cd's since then!

Andalusia 06-13-02 04:51 PM

CD's: 700+
albums: 1000+
cassettes: 100+
8-tracks: 34
reel-to-reel: 12
mini-discs: a big fat whoppin' ZERO! :D

Scorpio 06-13-02 08:05 PM

1300, give or take, all in artist alphabetical order and then by release date.

ChrisKnudsen 06-13-02 11:20 PM

only a mere 400.

Three Day Delay 06-14-02 12:27 AM

I giggle looking at the answers here. When I was 25, I had about 2000 CDs. But then space, time and money became factors.

I have narrowed it down to 200, and I feel naked.

RevLiver 06-14-02 11:00 AM

1576 CDs, I think, according to cdtracker.

I've been collecting them since 1994 and in the last year, since I met a fellow music fanatic, I've added about 800. I buy a lot of used, especially when it's mainstream stuff. Otherwise, mainstream I get through CH, doing the music club the same way everyone does the DVD club. But I also listen to a lot of indie and imports that are impossible to get used, so it all balances out in the end.
