I nominate: The Stone Roses.

From that sublime debut (which I swear I played non-stop, full volume, everday of my senior year in college) to the utter claptrap that followed - what the hell happened?

Any record named "The Second Coming" is bound to fail. Just like Michael Jackson made a huge mistake naming the new one "Invincible."

But I agree with the Stone Roses. The debut is amazing.

With a lot of the artists listed in here I think people are just listing musicians or bands they liked and they just want more material from them. To me, that isn't what the question is about. It should be about people not being able to make music, not that they chose not to.

I totally agree with Ian Curtis Pikul.

I totally disagree with Jim Morrison, Hendrix or Joplin.

I wish Brian Jones hadn't died. I know he wouldn't have been a Stone anymore, but more material like The Pipes of Pan at Jajouka would have been wonderful.

The Stone Roses had one of the most amazing -- not a good amazing -- falls from grace. Legal problems didn't help.

Meatpants -- have you heard any of John Cale's early rock-based solo records? For me, Vintage Violence, Paris 1919, and Fear rate really well with the Velvet Underground records. However, I'm not a very big Lou Reed fan.

The Gandharvas. Once they tried to slip "into the mainstream" they died a quiet death. I saw them in a club with about 20 people in it, and most people left once they started playing their older stuff, really unfortunate.

Gram Parsons had a lot more good music in him. Seems to me he was in (or close to) his prime when he died.

Material Issue's albums kept steadily getting better and better until Jim Ellison killed himself. So there's another one.

I have to wonder about the Sex Pistols, though. Weren't they already an embarrassment by their second album?

I have to add Brainiac to the list. After their last EP I thought that it was inevitible that they were about to do something amazing for the next record. However Enon are pretty great so that's a minor consolation I guess.

I woulad have to add the Pixies.

They have a decent sized catalogue, but they broke up right as that kind of music was becoming popular.

Whenever I listen to their music, it is hard to believe that they were making it at the same time crappy hair bands like Extreme, Poison, etc. were making crap.

(sorry to any Extreme or poison fan, just an opinion )

Choking Victim. They broke up the day they recorded their first full-length CD.

I think there were a couple:

First Gregg Alexander who was the singer of the New Radicals. He just left the music world. Not really sure of all the reasons why, but I liked the music and his philosophies pretty well.

Second, and I'm sure many will disagree: Smashing Pumpkins. I really think that their last two albums showed a lot of musical progression and the chance to be something quite spectacular--much better than they had already shown.

Perhaps it is the hippy in me, but I likedSecond Coming even though it was disorganised and self-indulgent! I was later given The Complete Stone Roses but I don't know if that really was all their pre-SC material (and never checked!)

I think perhaps there is space for a new thread for artists whose career was way too long!!

Frank Zappa

Had a prolific career, but there was

I agree also. Metallica changed for the worst after his death. Master of Puppets is the last greatest classic metal album.
