Hannibal, in a word, was FANTASTIC! The only
way to describe the experience of seeing Hannibal,
opening night, was as follows: exhilaration,
terrifying, funny, passionate and lastly,
disgusting. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, Hannibal
has earned top ranks among my all-time best films
for 2001!

Director Ridley Scott has created an environment,
richly textured, warm and inviting, yet horrifying -
all at the same time. He is an unmistaken craftsmen
who has taken Thomas Harris' novel to a level of excellence, I for one, had never imagined.
Anthony Hopkins and Julianne Moore were outstanding. Controversy originally soared when actress Jodie
Foster declined to play F.B.I. agent Clarice Starling
in Hannibal. Let me say, upfront, Julianne Moore
fills Foster’s shoes exquisitely and manages to
achieve a fresh, newly sculpted incarnation of
Starling’s character. The chemistry between Hopkins
and Moore are riveting, adversarial, and maybe even primal. Wow, they really work well together.

I will not reveal anything about the plot, as all
of its intricate twists and turns should be
embraced like an engaging roller-coaster ride.
Those of you who read the Hannibal novel will be
happy to learn that David Mamet’s screenplay is
quite faithful to the Thomas Harris’ work, yet
there are a few plot altercations as well.
(Don’t worry, as I do not intend to reveal the
differences - I only wish to communicate that,
Mamet’s changes are a welcomed breath of fresh air.)

I recommend seeing this film as soon as possible,
as there will be plenty of people spoiling it for
future viewers, especially the ending, AND WHAT AN INCREDIBLE ENDING! I cannot praise this film enough! However, at all costs, avoid the reviews - both print
and television - they are ALL exemplary in their
critical appraisal. This is a film not to be missed!
