Four-time Academy Award® nominee Ethan Hawke returns to the most sinister role of his career as The Grabber seeks vengeance on Finn (Mason Thames) from beyond the grave by menacing Finn’s younger sister, Gwen (Madeleine McGraw). As Finn, now 17, struggles with life after his captivity, the headstrong 15-year-old Gwen begins receiving calls in her dreams from the black phone and seeing disturbing visions of three boys being stalked at a winter camp known as Alpine Lake. Determined to solve the mystery and end the torment for both her and her brother, Gwen persuades Finn to visit the camp during a winter storm. There, she uncovers a shattering intersection between The Grabber and her own family’s history. I picked up the first one this week on Vudu and was pleasantly surprised how good it was. I had no idea about the plot so I just expected a slasher film not a psychological thriller. Looking forward to seeing this sequel.

This evenings movie. I liked it but damnit the trailer showed a lot. It's a sequel and a prequel because you get some Grabber backstory. I think the first was better but I still enjoyed this one.

I give it a very generous 3 stars. Maybe more like 2.75. I think this was a case where this sequel wasn't really needed. Yes, it had some good atmosphere and visuals. But, they basically just turned Hawke's character into another Freddy. He's basically terrorizing Gwen and Finney in their nightmares. Hawke is still good and creepy as The Grabber. And I felt like it had a little Stranger Things vibe as well.
 Anyway, it had it's moments that I thought were creepy, but to me it wasn't as compelling as the 1st movie. This definitely heavily goes more into the supernatural. |
Re: The Black Phone 2 (2025, D: Derrickson) -- The Spoiler Reviews Thread
My wife and I just watched the first one a couple weeks ago. I hadn’t seen it but was looking for a new horror movie to watch. Wound up liking it quite a bit. We both were wondering how a sequel would work.
To my surprise I liked it a lot. I would say it’s on par with the first, and actually I may have liked it slightly more. The obvious thing is that this movie very heavily was influenced by A Nightmare on Elm Street/Freddy. That aside though I think they put their own twist on that idea while building out more of The Grabber’s lore. A lot of good scares and horror elements. I liked that the same characters were back again. The setting was interesting and I liked the idea of having to find the victims to take away The Grabber’s powers. Overall quite a surprise for me. I’ll probably end up buying both movies on 4K eventually. |

I just watched it this evening on a Dolby Cinema screen. I really liked it. The background with the mom was great and having the daughter as the main character was a nice change for the sequel. I'm probably not completely sure about the characters in the real world getting thrown around and slashed by a subconscious invisible dream demon, I think I could have bought that the sister was getting wounded since she has that connection, but others getting hurt was more of a stretch, but it's a movie and I still had fun watching it.

I still like the lead kids so I didn't hate this or anything, but I think the first film was a closed loop and trying to force more story out of it just didn't work for me.

First one was much better

Re: The Black Phone 2 (2025, D: Derrickson) -- The Spoiler Reviews Thread
Finally watched the first one yesterday, then went to the theater to watch the sequel. Thought they did a pretty good job at shoehorning more into what could have easily been a solid one and done, but hope they’re done now. But I’d watch these again for sure.
Sad to see the ‘Christians’ stereotyped as they normally are, but they did redeem themselves mostly at the end. Solid message overall. |

Re: The Black Phone 2 (2025, D: Derrickson) -- The Spoiler Reviews Thread
Completely unnecessary sequel.
Plodding. Muddled plot. Creatively bankrupt to the point that they remade Nightmare on Elm Street at a summer camp... yikes! |

Re: The Black Phone 2 (2025, D: Derrickson) -- The Spoiler Reviews Thread
I was excited to see this because I loved the traiIer. I didn't care for the first film at all, and thought this would be a nice change.
Honestly, this is the worst movie I've watched in quite some time. I don't say that lightly either - I've seen some duds consistently but this movie was just terrible. It was completely devoid of any tension at all. Hawke, who usually doesn't do sequels, well, I see why he did this one. He was probably allowed to just voice act due to his limited screen time. It's not even worth getting into why I hated this movie so much and I just don't care to. Only cool part was when he come walking out of the shadows in the cafeteria. |
