Yes, I'm in the minority. The original trilogy are my least favorite. But, the best of the 3 is Part 3. My least favorite is the original movie. I know that's not a popular opinion.

2 gets crapped on and maybe it's a little too John Woo and over-stylized, but I think it's more entertaining than 1.

MI 3 had the best villain, so it's probably always going to be my favorite. Ghost Protocol is second.

Fallout
Ghost Protocol
Rogue Nation
Mission: Impossible III
Dead Reckoning
Final Reckoning
Mission: Impossible
M:I 2

With the exception of Mission: Impossible 2, I’ve enjoyed them all quite a bit. I’ve ranked them but my opinion of them all is about the same. The level of quality really isn’t much different between movies. It’s probably the most consistently high quality movie series I can think of.

I don’t know them well enough to rank them all but 3 is my favorite due to PSH

Haven't seen Final Reckoning, but based on Dead Reckoning, I don't see it being a favorite.

Ghost Protocol
Fallout
Mission Impossible
Rogue Nation
Dead Reckoning
MI2
MI3

Wow, MI 3 last?
I do get this it’s totally very different from pretty much all of the others. And it doesn’t really have the amazing set piece that the others are all known for. But yeah, it has that wonderful, scenery chewing performance from PSH in one of his only ‘paycheck’ performances , but one that he still fully committed to.
It also has that shocking opening mission where the lovely Kerry Russell is suddenly killed, while Ethan holds her. I thought that was so well done. And it perfectly sets up the scene later where Ethan faces the same fate, and instead takes a fatal electrocution, after coaching his nurse wife to bring him back. To this day, I think it’s the best emotional scene in any of these films. And a similar scene in Final Reckoning really highlights how much worse it can go when not properly set up or shot. It really drove home for me how much more I liked MI : 3.
The one think I’ve never liked about 3 though is the out-of-continuity opening. That always felt wrong, and of course it turns out to be a cheat anyway. But getting that showdown so early, it ruins the early apprehension of Davian scenes that come later. And then of course we see the whole scene a second time, which doesn’t make for good cinema. Outside of that, I really liked the film.

And sorry, Final Reckoning, but the Rabbit’s Foot is NOT the Entity. It’s very, very clearly a biohazard and almost certainly some sort of a bio weapon. It’s not going to be an AI program stored like this.

MI3 is winning the poll (so far) so you're not alone there. It revived the series for me after Woo derailed it.

Re: Which Mission: Impossible movie is your favorite and what order?

I haven't seen Final Reckoning yet, so maybe this will change, but M:I3 is easily my least favorite of the series. Hoffman is great, but I can see Hoffman be great in a dozen other movies that aren't otherwise completely pedestrian M:I movies. 2 is objectively the stupider movie, but as a Woo devotee, I can't in good conscious rank it last.

The original is my favorite, but a lot of that may be nostalgia. Still, no matter how many times Cruise tries to kill himself for our enjoyment, the Langley break-in remains the greatest single set-piece in the entire series.

III
Fallout
Rogue Nation
Ghost Protocol
1996
Final Reckoning
Dead Reckoning
II

It's not just PSH, but I also liked some of the team stuff in III. Some of the movies just don't have enough team stuff, which was the point of the TV show. Will be seeing Final Reckoning tonight, but while Dead Reckoning is entertaining, the MacGuffin is just so stupid I can't imagine it being better in the last one.

I'd like the first one more if it didn't shit all over the TV show. I always thought it was a missed opportunity that JJ Abrams (when he was producing them) didn't get Nimoy or Landau to do a little bit with a mask reveal. That would have been a cool moment.

Cruise riding a motorcycle off a cliff was the stunt that got the most attention in Dead Reckoning, and it was cool, but rewatching it the other night, I was completely blown away by the train falling sequence at the end. It was just so well done! I think it’s probably the most well done sequence in the series. Certainly not as iconic as Cruise dangling from the wire in the first movie but, IMO, much more impressive.

I’d also rank the bullet train sequence in the first movie ahead of the Langley break-in as well. Rewatching the original M:I after probably 25 years, I was amazed by how well that sequence holds up after all this time.

We're very close. (I'd swap 1 and 2 but that's about it) Regardless of order, I think 4, 5 and 6 are clearly the three best, with the Dead Reckoning films in the middle and the original three (in any order) after that. I don't think anything can compare to the wild trajectory of the Fast & Furious series, but this one is up there with the interesting turns it's taken over the decades.

The Langley sequence is just much closer to what I want out of these movies. Impeccably directed suspense and intrigue as opposed to spectacle and stunts. The theater sequence in Rogue Nation is another great example. Don't get me wrong, stunts are super cool, but they all start to blur together after a while.

But speaking of stunts, the underwater stuff in Rogue Nation might be the most insane thing Cruise ever did, but I think it gets slept on due to some wonky cgi distracting us from the fact that he's actually close to drowning.

For sure. It’s a great sequence. Like I said, it’s iconic and iconic for a reason.

There was also some ill advised editing in that sequence as well. They touted Cruise being able to hold his breath for 6 minutes (which is a bullshit claim but whatever) and then they didn’t hold a single shot for more than a few seconds each. If you’ve got the poor guy holding his breath for anywhere near as long as they claim then show it! Don’t make a ton of unnecessary cuts. A 5-minute single take of him under water would have been mind-blowing.

I just listened to The Big Picture podcast on Final Reckoning, which they were very mixed on. They ended the show with their MI rankings, which were as follows
1) Fallout
2) MI
3) Ghost Protocol
4) Rogue Nation
5) Dead Reckoning
6) MI:3
7) Final Reckoning
8) MI:2

They added another criticism of MI:3, that it looks like a TV show. I can't argue with that. It does look a lot like an episode of Alias

Re: Which Mission: Impossible movie is your favorite and what order?

I haven't seen Final Reckoning, but so far:

1.) Fallout: pure perfection. The opening hospital scene fake out with Wolf Blitzer was brilliant. The bathroom fight with Cavill is just amazing. The final helicopter chase was just edge of your seat adrenaline. Carrying over Solomon Lane as a villain was great. Sean Harris just crushes it.

2.) Rogue Nation: The film that truly elevated the franchise for me. Plus Rebecca Ferguson's debut into the M:I world was fantastic. Also see above about Solomon Lane who's just a great villain for Ethan.

3.) Dead Reckoning: Esai Morales was also a pretty solid villain and foil for Hunt. Despite it's length it's always moving. Haley Atwell was a perfect addition. Vanessa Kirby returning and adding Pom Klementieff was great.

4.) Mission: Impossible: I was never a fan of this back when it originally came out. However with a couple of recent viewings it's hard to deny how great the film is. It clearly doesn't have the action of recent entries but it's a damn good movie.

5.) Ghost Protocol: From what I recall, 3hree great action sequences strung together with the thinnest plot thread possible. So much so it felt like the movie was written around the action set pieces vs the other way around. I remember Benji & Luthor picking up the slack where the plot dragged.

6. & 7.) II & III: I haven't seen part 2 in twenty years, and only saw M:I3 once, so I don't recall much of either. So tie for last place.

Re: Which Mission: Impossible movie is your favorite and what order?

For me, Ghost Protocol, Rogue Nation, Fallout, and Dead Reckoning are the high points of the series. It's been long enough for GP and RN that I can't remember enough about the specifics to give any kind of order for them.

After those four I'd probably go with MI fifth, then MI3, Final Reckoning being the next group, and MI2 last.

I'd have to do a mini-marathon over a month or two to get a more exact order, but that's kind of the rough idea of how I group them.

Well, it was co-written and directed by JJ Abrams and it was his feature directorial debut. I think it was his 1st project post-Alias.
