Favorite director of all time. Wish he was more prolific but the movies and music that he created will last forever. Lynch is probably my third favorite artist behind Bob Dylan and Neil Young and both of them are up there in age too. RIP.

His best film IMO. Mulholland Drive would be my second favorite.

Amazing that it's been 19 years since he directed his last film. It was considered a lifetime between Malick's gap between Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line - and that gap was only a year longer.

Yep, The Straight Story is my favorite Lynch. One of the best movies made in the last 30 years. It's a crime he never won a Best Director Oscar and shows how meaningless those awards have become.

The Elephant Man is the first "serious" movie I can remember watching as a kid. I was too young to fully process it at the time but remember being emotionally affected by its haunting, poignant story.

Parts of Twin Peaks are sheer genius. Such an influential show that paved the way for more adventurous storytelling in serialized drama.

Not a movie, but so glad that Twin Peaks : The Return got made. It was really weird and crazy and cool. Not a bad note to go out on.

Oh man, that sucks. :( I've been introducing my teenage son to cool films from the 80s and 90s, and forgot to show him some Lynch. Next time he's home from school I think I'll have to watch Blue Velvet with him.

Agreed, his most humble and most accessible film. I have long appreciated his work from a technical perspective (we dissected several Blue Velvet shots/sequences in one of my video production classes), but the dream logic of most of his work just doesn't resonate with me.

I seem to remember that this film popped up on Network Television quite a bit throughout the 80s and I was, still am, transfixed by it.
Following that, In the first issue of Fangoria that I ever bought, there was an article for the upcoming Blue Velvet which sure grabbed my attention. The rest is history.

Those who haven't seen The Elephant Man should really rectify that soon. I cry like a baby at the end every time and now I'm sure I will even moreso.

Definitely. I didn't love The Return as a whole, but episode 8 taken as a standalone Lynch film in the Twin Peaks universe stands as one of the best things he's ever made IMO.

I'm not a huge fan, most of the film summaries don't really catch my attention, but I'll always love his flawed but stylish Dune and The Straight Story was just beautiful.

He had made mention in recent years of taking another crack at editing Dune, but I guess he didn't get around to it. I'm happy with the TV cut on DVD but I wonder if he would have felt better giving Dune a little more attention before he passed on (since I know the whole thing bugged him for years ).

Yeah Lynch introduced me to DUNE back in the 80's and I'll be forever grateful. DUNE '84 made me go read the OG Books and become a lifelong fan of the Universe. :up: I never held DUNE '84 against him because I loved it; and the film still holds a special place in my "Film Heart".

Damn, I'm sorry to hear this. My grandfather was a lifelong smoker and died with emphysema. It was really sad.

Watching Mulholland Drive was an experience that really changed my relationship with movies. It shifted my reality. The first time I watched it I was alone at home and when the credits started I shouted angrily at the television, "What the fuck was that?!" Then I watched it again a few days later. Then I bought the dvd. RIP Mr. Lynch.

One of my favorite DVD watching experiences was going through the 10 clues that Lynch attached to the DVD release of MD. I mean, some of it made sense and some of it didn’t but it was fun to go through.

Circling back to Twin Peaks for a second. Lynch was one of the first "name" filmmakers to fully embrace television as a viable medium for their art. Lots of directors do it now like Curon and McQueen and Soderbergh, but back then it was pretty rare (besides Alfred Hitchcock Presents, I guess)

I'll be honest, I'm not really a big fan of Lynch, despite his body of work and status as a filmmaker. I haven't seen a lot of his work, but some of those that I have seen I've found odd and hard to follow.

Although, I did enjoy the original Twins Peaks and the Fire Walk with Me movie.

But, I respect what he's done and the cult status he's achieved. RIP

Damn. That was a transformative experience for me at 16. I realized that film could transcend simple storytelling and become pure artistic vision. I'd love for you to share your reaction once you see it. It is probably my favorite Lynch film and easily in my all-time Top 5 list.
