Clayface (2026, D: Watkins)

‘Clayface’ Movie Officially Underway at DC Studios With Mike Flanagan Writing

Fresh off the success of the HBO series “The Penguin,” DC Studios has officially greenlit a feature film centered around Clayface, the shapeshifting Batman villain, from a script written by “Doctor Sleep” filmmaker Mike Flanagan, according to a source with direct knowledge of the production. Plot details are scarce, but filming is expected to begin early next year.

Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris will produce through their company 6th & Idaho Productions.

Flanagan, who first pitched DC Studios on a Clayface project in 2023, tweeted in 2021 that he was “really keen to do a standalone Clayface movie as a horror/thriller/tragedy.” But he is already committed to write and direct a new take on “The Exorcist” for Universal [...] So DC has been on the hunt for a director to take the reins, and an announcement is imminent.

Posted on the future DC projects page but thought it deserved its own thread (unless I missed one).

I'm only familiar with the character as portrayed in Batman: The Animated Series, but I thought those were among the best episodes of that series. I'm a fan of Flanagan's Netflix horror shows, so if this was written by him I am hopeful it will be good.

Hopefully it involves the Mud Pack.

Extremely bad timing for this right in the wake of Sony's failed Villain-verse. WB should just be bold as hell and announce in all press-junkets that Clayface WILL be a very good movie, at least.

Looks like it was officially greenlit. September 11, 2026 is the release date.

Flanagan is only writing. He's busy with some other projects. The story says they are looking for a director.

This could be good. Especially if it was set in the universe of The Batman. Probably will be separate but I could see a semi realistic take on the character working well. I’d like to see full blown monster Clayface like in Batman: The Animated Series but doubt we’ll get that version.

My post from the DC thread:

It'd be awesome as a period piece. Make him a Gotham City actor at the end of the silent film era who struggles to transition to "talkies," and so ends up undergoing his transformation as part of some low-budget horror film. A full-on monster film that ends by suggesting he will take on knew identities as the years pass and then perhaps even shows him in modern Gotham in the final scene.

People are used to Clayface thru BTAS and more recently Harley Quinn, so it's not as bad as forcing a new character that no one has seen before.

They should go full circle and have Billy Bob Thornton play him.

Get a real actor made of clay or get the fuck out.

I'm wondering if this will morph into a TV mini-series (a la Penguin) or move to Max (or w/e it'll be called in two years).

I would watch that if you cast Sir Daniel Day-Lewis, because he's crazy enough to become an actual shape-shifter in preparation for the role.

Tom Rhys Harries Lands Role Of ‘Clayface’ In DC Studios James Watkins Movie

By Anthony D'Alessandro, Justin Kroll
June 17, 2025 8:00am

When it came to casting the lead in DC Studios’ next big movie, Clayface, the studio went with a fresh face, that being Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries.

The actor from the Uma Thurman Apple TV series Suspicion and such movies as Uberto Pasolini’s The Return (starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche), the Gerard Butler action title Kandahar and Guy Ritchie’s The Gentleman landed the role from a competitive list of British thespians, i.e. 28 Years Later‘s Jack O’Connell, Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes‘ Tom Blyth, The White Lotus’ Leo Woodall and 1917‘s George MacKay.
Gunn has confirmed...

Naomi Ackie in Early Talks to Join Tom Rhys Harries to Star in ‘Clayface’ (Exclusive)
By Borys Kit, Mia Galuppo

Naomi Ackie, the multi-faceted actress from Mickey 17 and Blink Twice, is joining the DCU in Clayface.

Ackie is in early talks to join the up-and-coming Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries, who is playing the titular supervillain in the movie from Speak No Evil director James Watkins. Reading sessions took place in England last week with Ackie emerging as the choice. Formal negotiations are due to begin this week, according to several sources.

Mike Flanagan wrote the script for Clayface, a body horror thriller centered on a Batman villain known for his ability to alter his appearance.

The project is described as having shades and structure of The Fly, David Cronenberg’s 1986 that starred Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis and centered on the tragic relationship between a scientist who becomes fused with the DNA of a fly and the journalist writing about his discovery.

Clayface, which sources have said will have a budget in the mid-$40 million range, centers on an ascending actor whose face is disfigured by a gangster. As a last resort, the actor turns to a fringe Elizabeth Holmes-style scientist for help. At first, the experiment is a successful but … well, it wouldn’t be a horror movie if the story ended right there, would it?

The film is already dated for Sept. 11, 2026, one of the surprise early entries of the James Gunn and Peter Safran DC-era, coming in ahead of better-known characters like Wonder Woman. The Batman director Matt Reeves will produce, along with Lynn Harris and Gunn and Safran.

So is this Clayface the same iteration that appears in Creature Commandos or totally disconnected from the DCU, like Batman in The Batman?

It's DCU so presumably it's the same character.

From this story..."However, speaking at a DC Studios presentation attended by IGN, Gunn and Safran explained why Clayface had to be part of the DCU, as opposed to Matt Reeves’ The Batman Epic Crime Saga.

“Clayface is totally DCU,” Gunn confirmed. “The only thing that's in Matt's world, his Crime Saga that he's telling, is the Batman Trilogy, the Penguin series, that's in that lane," Safran clarified. "So still under DC Studios, still under us. We have an incredible relationship with Matt, but those are the only things.

“It was important that Clayface be part of the DCU. It's an origin story for a classic Batman villain that we want to have in our world.”"

Thanks, mwbmis. I was in doubt since it's an origin story. Then again, in hindsight, I guess despite Batman: The Animated Series and Batman: Arkham City, the mainstream doesn't really know Clayface.

Okay, they're marketing it as body horror. Interesting strategy.
