The Equalizer 4 - S: Washington

... and 5!

Nothing official yet...

In The Equalizer 2, director Antoine Fuqua gave Denzel Washington’s character a new ability he called “Equalizer Vision.” Basically, it allowed Washington’s Robert McCall to instantly find every weapon’s location in a room and know how to use it effectively. The action film made $190 million at the box office. So did The Equalizer 3. Now Washington is using his “Equalizer Vision” to foresee another two films in his future.

“I told them I would do another Equalizer, and we’re doing four and five,” Washington told Esquire in our latest cover story. Many fans believed that Equalizer 3 marked the official finale to the Equalizer trilogy. According to Washington, there’s not just one but two more Equalizers in the works.

“More people are happy about that—people love those daggone Equalizers,” Washington continued. “But I’ve come to realize that the Equalizer films are for me, too, because they’re for the people. They want me to go get the bad guys. ‘We can’t get them, so you go get them.’ And I say, Okay, I’ll get them! Just wait right there. I’ll be right back!”

As Washington is the first to break the news, there’s no word yet on when either Equalizer sequel will premiere in theaters. Audiences can probably bet that Fuqua will return to work on both installments in some capacity. The director left Washington’s character retired at the end of The Equalizer 3—but there’s always another mission to pull our hero back in.

I would think it's a package deal as the only person that could bring him out of Altamonte would be Dakota Fanning's character.

Three felt like a perfect ending/passing of the torch. If they wanna do two more, they need to be at least as good as part three.

I'm a huge fan of the Franchise and I'll watch EQ4... but EQ3 was shockingly "meh".

I am Ok with 3 being the last.

Although 3 seemed to have the "Perfect" ending with McCall stopping the Italian mob and then living in retirement. If he manages to get at least 4 off the ground, I will gladly watch it. Denzel is just so charismatic as McCall.

I love them with the exception of the first's finale....it got very formulaic (typical Hollywood shit), but it was still great. Denzel fits the role great - this is great news for me.

I'd rather Denzel spend his 70's on other projects tbh. Especially if there's going to be a limited amount as he's alluded to in his recent interviews. Work with top tier directors, help out with your son's films, etc. I get loyalty, but Antoine Fuqua has been helped enough.

Don't mean to quote myself, I just wanted to say that I think it was a great reply with all its greatness.

Why though? He's physically fit and looks great (I had no idea he was even that old) and people love these movies. Top tier directors? Denzel has done it all - he's worked with plenty.

Denzel can do whatever he wants. He's long paid his dues. Doesn't need to do smaller projects with up and comers or other top tier directors. He's already done that.

As said, he's in excellent shape and it genuinely looks like he's having a blast on The Equalizer movies.

His face has become very thin recently, which comes with age. Reminds me of how Tom Hanks has looked the past few years. But Denzel is still solidly built and any slowness of movement can be addressed through fast cuts (which they're already doing with this series).

That said: I'd watch Denzel in any role. Really looking forward to seeing him in Gladiator 2 soon.

Denzel was on GMA this morning. He says he plans to work for at least 10 more years as an actor and director. And yes he casually mentioned that would include some Equalizer movies.

He specifically mentioned he wants to work with top talent in this last stage of his career, naming some of the younger directors - of which Fuqua is neither. And while he of course looks great for his age I did find him in Equalizer 3 to be a lot less convincing than the first - the editing was doing a lot of the lifting. Still enjoyable films (not huge btw, they make about 200m) and if he wants to do a few more, fine. I just hope it doesn't mean turning down some more interesting projects.
