Godzilla X Kong: Supernova (2027, D: Sputore)
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings screenwriter Dave Callaham is going from the Marvelverse to the Monsterverse. The scribe, known for his action acumen, has been tapped to pen the next installment of Legendary’s Godzilla/Kong monster movie series. The hiring comes in the wake of the box office success of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which has grossed close to $555 million worldwide. That is the biggest haul since 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, which peaked at $568 million. Empire, which is still in theaters, may also be one of the most profitable (if not the single most profitable) of the five movies in the series, as it only cost $135 million, per sources. Thus Legendary is keen to keep the monster juice flowing. Adam Wingard directed Empire and created the story with frequent collaborator Simon Barrett as well as Terry Rossio. Legendary has signaled it would like to see Wingard return to the director’s chair after a successful run that also included the 2021 entry Godzilla vs. Kong. But Wingard has no deal at this stage. Complicating matters, the filmmaker is intent on making an original movie, titled Onslaught, this fall for A24, before taking on any other projects. Still, Callaham knows a thing or two about Godzilla. The scribe wrote the early drafts and received story by credit for 2014’s Godzilla, the movie that kicked off Legendary’s monster mania. The company’s five movies have collectively earned $2.5 billion at the global box office, and last year, it expanded into TV with Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. The show has proven to be a hit for Apple TV+ and now a second season as well as spinoffs are in the works. Callaham is known for originating The Expendables action franchise and worked on movies such as the 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot and Wonder Woman 1984. He earned praise for writing Marvel’s well-regarded 2021 entry Shang-Chi and co-wrote Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which earned a best animated feature Oscar. Callaham is currently writing the third and final film in the series, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, with Phil Lord & Chris Miller. He is repped by UTA and Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment. |

Less Kong please. More King Of The Monsters.

re: Untitled Godzilla / Kong Film (2027, D: Sputore)
I would rather the next one be a standalone Godzilla movie. Maybe also show what Rodan has been up to since KotM. Kratos Kong has had enough of the spotlight.

Basically Unknown director hired. He last worked 5 years ago on a Netflix movie. Probably super cheap.

That's not good news. Unless the guy came to them with the mother of all pitches.

re: Untitled Godzilla / Kong Film (2027, D: Sputore)
Gareth Edwards and Jordan Vogt-Roberts were mostly unknown with one feature before being hired for their films in the series. It's no different.

I'm fine giving somebody new a shot at the franchise... results have been a solid B at best anyhow.

EXCLUSIVE: Everyone’s favorite titans are getting a new human co-star for their follow-up to Godzilla x Kong. Sources tell Deadline that Kaitlyn Dever is in negotiations to join the cast in the latest sequel to Legendary’s Monsterverse movie. Grant Sputore steps in as director following in footsteps of Adam Wingard, who directed the last two pics, from a script by Dave Callaham. The new movie is described as a continuation of the franchise centering Godzilla, Kong and an assortment of other Titans. Insiders say that while Kong and Godzilla will still be fronting the film, Legendary is looking to build on its human characters and the first logical choice landed on Dever, whose star has been on the rise for some time. She now joins the franchise as it combines character-driven storytelling with its signature epic scale and Titan-clashing action in Sputore’s vision. |
re: Untitled Godzilla / Kong Film (2027, D: Sputore)
If they want to "build on their human characters", why not flesh out the ones they already have? Shit, why didn't they use Monarch: Legacy of Monsters to make Mari Yamamoto and Kurt Russell the leads of the movies going forward, since they kicked Kyle Chandler to the curb after Godzilla: King of the Monsters?

^ As long as it’s not Millie Bobby Brown and loud podcast guy, I’m ok with that.
Godzilla Minus One killed it with the human characters. Something all these Kong/Godzilla Universe movies have failed miserably at. |
re: Untitled Godzilla / Kong Film (2027, D: Sputore)
I found Brian Tyree Henry amusing, but agree that Godzilla Minus One is the gold standard for human characters in these flicks.

For me it's not just the human characters that elevate Godzilla Minus One, it's specifically that Godzilla represents a larger cultural feeling in which they are existing

Ugh building on human characters just gave me way less hope.

Well, in all fairness so too does Legendary Godzilla. Except he and Kong seem to both represent Greta Thunberg.

I haven’t seen this new director’s Netflix movie, but it seems intriguing and reasonably well-liked. Then again, there’s been a lot of decent low- to mid-budget sci-fi movies out there the past few years from which a number of new-ish directors might have the chops to do a U.S. Godzilla movie. |

Well... No, not really. The idea of Godzilla being a "balancer" of Titans as it pertains to an ecosystem is never really given much beyond lip service and human culpability in upsetting ecosystems through our profit-first business models is never addressed

I have no idea who this "up and coming" actress is, but I'm guessing they probably couldn't work out scheduling or enough money to get someone like Dafne Keen or Jenna Ortega. In terms of story, I expect this to be no different than the other MonsterVerse entries after the 2014 Godzilla. Basically, American re-imaginings of the Showa era kaiju movies. I felt the previous entry could have lost about 25 minutes and had a solid close to kaiju only movie, so not much confidence they will add much this time around either.

The dentist to the monsters is returning. Dan Stevens, who played fan favorite character Trapper in Legendary’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, is in negotiations to reprise his role for the latest Monsterverse installment from the company. Grant Sputore (I Am Mother) is directing the creature feature, which recently brought on its first human actor, Kaitlyn Dever, who is new to the franchise. Plot details are being kept under the Earth’s crust, but Legendary has said the story will feature “several new human characters alongside the beloved and iconic Titans Godzilla and Kong as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat.” |
Re: Untitled Godzilla / Kong Film (2027, D: Sputore)
He was a fun bit of comic relief in the last movie.
But what I really want is beefed up screentime for Godzilla. He was essentially a special guest star in the last movie. And for all the build-up, his Super Saiyan Rose transformation accomplished nothing. |
Re: Untitled Godzilla / Kong Film (2027, D: Sputore)
I'm with RocShemp. Trapper was one of the few humans I liked, and Godzilla was nearly pointless in a movie containing his name. I'm hugely biased though, as I grew up watching Godzilla movies on Saturday mornings with Grandpa Munster and his Super Scary Saturday movies. I've never really liked Kong at all.
