well, more the second hour. but, the first sets it up and he definitely gets the shit beat out of him, more than John Wick i would say. yes, it's different, but the last hour of action, can't be denied is very John Wickish.

There are countless Asian films (and by Dev's admission inspiration for) that are similar and came out before John Wick ... are they "John Wickish" too? It's a lazy comparison.

The only thing Monkey Man really has in common with John Wick is that it's a revenge action movie. That pretty much describes every kung fu movie ever made. I get why people make the comparison, but ultimately I think it's pretty reductive.

Most people have never seen or watched them and have no idea those types of films exist. So we will probably get the comparison for some time to come until the "next" type of movie that would be my guess.

Like I said previously I will catch it streaming.

What do you mean "Most"? That's a pretty hyperbolic generalization. Just because Asian action films aren't on your normal radar?

It's been a few weeks since I've seen this, but Dev's character wasn't some unstoppable superhero with exemplary fighting skills. He got injured and his ass kicked a lot.

I am talking the general public I guess as far as Asian Action films go. I have watched many of them and used to always buy the "hot" topic one in the International DVD section all the time. So yes I am versed in them but the general population is probably not. That is what I meant as the general term for these types of movies now seems to be just like ...John Wick etc..Die Hard on a ....

I watched this on the weekend and liked it, certainly more than John Wick 4. Not great, but pretty entertaining.

My biggest complaint was how quickly he turned into a complete badass by punching a bag of rice, for a while.

Still, it was visually appealing, and satisfying to watch.

This was a good movie and surprised it is only a 2 page thread?

I thought maybe 4-6 or longer

The guru figure was confusing and not sure what was the meaning of his character or based on somebody in real life or emulating some kind of a charlatan?

The Guru and the flock of outcasts are transgender. They draw parallels with society and how the slumdogs and any other folk (non-traditional norm) are treated by the rich and by the police Both groups get treated like shit.

Sorry I was referring to Baba Shakti where is this holy man and thought maybe he was based on or inspired by somebody in real life.

The closest thing I could find:

Baba Shakti is likely a stand-in for Narendra Modi, India's current Hindu-nationalist prime minister (and the probable reason that Netflix dropped the project), but the flashes of Baba Shakti's ominous string-pulling don't effectively set him up as the Big Bad.

Thought this was an OK John Wick substitute. But was the trans message really what they were intending? Because I found it to be very anti trans - in that the men returned to their warrior true selves.

This thread isn't about the Robbie Williams biopic?
