Possibly the best film of 2023. I was blown away.

So good. The twist(?) towards the beginning was not something we were expecting. Shocked both myself and my wife.

The route I thought they may take was having Brown's character play the author when he needed to meet in person. That could have made for some funny scenes, similar to Affleck taking job interviews for Will in Good Will Hunting.

I liked the film, but didn't love it. I don't think it deserved a Best Picture nomination, but - hey - it was better than Barbie, so maybe it DOES deserve one. The performances are great - the story, not so much (there were no surprises for me, just some good laughs).

Worth mentioning; if you like to read, then I highly recommend the books by Iceberg Slim.

Slim was a former pimp/ex con who wrote exactly the type of literature the main character of this movie despises.

And yes, I'm white and found his books very entertaining and hilarious

Agreed with Jason Bovberg up there. Solid 7 out of 10, satire was spot-on but the family drama elements were hit-and-miss.

Also: Sterling K. Brown was very good in his role, but it was HARDLY Oscar caliber. I actually thought his role was rather anemic and unconvincing (although his acting was fine).

Poking around Just Watch, I can't find this anywhere online, yet, and my local AMC has been great about showing all of the Best Picture nominees lately but I haven't been able to make the showtimes (American Fiction is literally playing only right now for a matching 1:00pm matinee at the nearest 3 AMC theaters, it's a bummer). I just couldn't find a good show time that worked for me to see this one, and it will be the one major nominee I won't see in time for Sunday's awards show.

If anyone has MGM+ it's streaming there now and it's airing on the cable channel tomorrow night.

Yes, I misspoke when I wrote that it isn't anywhere. I should have wrote that it wasn't on any of my current subscription services, and with time limited before Sunday night already, I will likely not pay to rent it before then. That's more accurate. I'm sure it's good, though, and I'd like to see both of these nominated performances.

AF def took me by surprise. Didn’t think I would like it that much, but it truly is an incredible movie.

Update: I did watch it before Sunday night and I enjoyed it. That said, a few months later and not a lot of specifics linger with me unless I think hard about it. Still, a very fun viewing experience while watching it.

Agree with this.

Good movie, but wasn't as good or well-written as they made it out to be.
Brown was ok, but I was surprised to learn that he got an Oscar nod for that. Wright was excellent though.

The idea of the film isn't new, and the ending felt cliched.
Didn't feel the point of his sister really.

I watched this on a plane last week and really enjoyed it, a family drama with a Clue ending.
