I think music authenticity wasn't considered very important after the Spice Girls where auto-tune and the performers lip-synching to their own prerecorded tracks at live shows became the norm - "Wow! They're so good it sounds just like the original recording!"

Symbolically the Milli Vanilli scandal accelerated the demise of 80's-style poser-pop music and ushered-in the darker, brooding, dialed-down "authentic" music scene with grunge.

I'm sure they will cover it in this film, but John Davis, who sang Rob's vocals, died of COVID-19 2 years ago. I just happened to see he was listed as deceased on the Milli Vanilli wiki

Fab actually did some performances with him as well in the years prior to his death.

Saw this yesterday, feel bad for the guys, especially Rob, but Fab seems to be doing really well.

This is out now. I gotta say it's extremely ballsy of MTV to produce this documentary when they were extremely directly involved in how popular this all was at the time. All the Arista records people lied their faces off to the cameras. Frank Farian is a fraud. All the people actually doing the work (Rob, Fab, Charles Shaw, John Davis, the Rocco sisters any of the other performers I forgot) got the shortest straw possible.

To be fair to MTV, the organization was in no way obligated nor expected to vet whether the materials delivered to them by the label were legitimate. It's cool actually that they produced it.

Watched this past Sunday. Really liked it overall. I think the lady who was Farian's assistant may not have been telling the truth when she said Rob and Fab had no problem with not doing the singing, as she seemed pretty shook up later by Rob's death and may have been feeling guilt. Then again, Fab admits to not really understanding what Rob was arguing with Farian about in their altercation and not really understanding anything, so he may have just nodded and signed wherever as well. Amusing that Farian more or less had a history of using fake front people for bands and even tried it again with the "real" Milli Vanilli.

I am glad they ended the movie with Fab performing Blame it on the Rain at the festival and showing how well he had rebounded.

I have to admit, I was a huge fan of them back in the day. I still listen to some songs due to me adding them to my playlist. I never realized why they received so much hate towards them when the cat got out of the bag. How many people would really turn down an offer to get rich and famous like they did before the shit hit the fan? At their age at the time, I highly doubt I would have turned it down.

I was a little bit to young back then, but I do remember the huge scandal. Back then my father was a music journalist and tried to explain to me what had happened and why Frank Farian was the bad guy in all of this. At least he didn't have a lot of success after the scandal and his part in La Bouche's success was minor.

This was a great documentary. Very extensive. Better than the late 90's VH1 Behind the Music special.

I felt bad for Rob and Fab. They weren't bad people. Just taken advantage of by a greedy record producer. It sucks that this scandal led to Rob's decline and eventual death. You could really see that Fab really loved Rob.

Fab actually evolved into a good singer. That was a nice way to end it with him looking happy and singing "Blame it on the Rain" and it was nice to see he's happy overall with his girlfriend and kids.

I found the full version of Fab singing Blame it on the Rain from the documentary. The performance was from 2018. Fab sounds incredible, but obviously he’s had years of training and practice to improve his voice. But, I’m really happy for him.
