Totally Killer (2023, D: Khan) S: Kiernan Shipka, Olivia Holt, Julie Bowen

They had so much time to kill in the ‘80s… 🔪 From Blumhouse comes #TotallyKiller – streaming on Prime Video October 6.

Starring Kiernan Shipka, Olivia Holt, Julie Bowen, Charlie Gillespie, Liana Liberato, Lochlyn Munro and featuring Randall Park.

35 years after the shocking murder of three teens, the infamous “Sweet Sixteen Killer“ returns on Halloween night to claim a fourth victim. 17-year-old Jamie (Kiernan Shipka) ignores her overprotective mom’s (Julie Bowen) warning and comes face to face with the masked maniac and on the run for her life, accidentally time travels back to 1987, the year of the original killings. Forced to navigate the unfamiliar and outrageous culture of the 1980s, Jamie teams up with her teen mom (Olivia Holt) to take down the killer once and for all before she’s stuck in the past forever.

Seems a bit like a ripoff of The Final Girls.

I read that too fast and I was like "has it been so long that Olivia Holt can play a mom" but it's the whole time travel thing, I get it.

It would be really awesome if they made these movies in the style ofthe 80s movies. I understand some things have not aged well, and I'm fine cutting those out, but replicating the cinematography and music would be really cool, maybe add a little grain filter, remove most of the polish...

Agreed. I was kind of hoping the cinematography was going to change when she went back in time.

If done right, 80s style can look great (House of the Devil). If done wrong, you get shit like That 80s Show. Having people in the 80s make 80s references isnít clever or interesting. Itís lazy. Iím hoping this movie isnít that.

The thing is that House of the Devil takes place in 1983 but almost looks like it could take place 10 years earlier due to the matte palette. The decade had not yet fully embraced its 80s garishness. Totally Killer takes place in 1987, when it was in full swing. No part of an early decade has formed its own identity until about the midway point of that decade. For example, 1980 -1983 still looked like the late 70s and so forth. By 1984, it had finally found its own identity.

As a big fan of teen slashers, and someone that was 16 in 1987, I loved this movie. It was a blast. This is one of my favorite movies of the year so far. I don’t know why this didn’t go to theaters.

I liked the comedy, time-travel stuff more than the horror stuff, but overall enjoyable. It's definitely a cheap looking TV movie, not worthy of a theatrical release.

Not quite the 80's horror slasher. The running joke that all the girls are horny sluts, but without nudity? C'mon now.

I was disappointed they didn't go the Back to the Future route by having the Dad (or better yet, the Mom) having the hots for the daughter.

I was entertained by this. Lightweight (though unexpectedly violent stabbing-wise) but I thought it was fun stuff overall.
I liked the humor, especially Shipka's 80s observations/asides.

I didnít catch this is Blumhouse. Yea this has an almost identical feel as Happy Death Day. If you liked that, you should like this.

They need to do an Avengers-type final girl team-up slasher with Jessica Rothe, Kathryn Newton, and Kiernan Shipka.

Hmm. The trailer didn't hook me at all, but I love Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2U. I guess I could give it a shot.

Re: Totally Killer (2023, D: Khan) S: Kiernan Shipka, Olivia Holt, Julie Bowen

Watched this today. I liked it a lot. Maybe not movie theater worthy, but the definitions of movies and theaters are evolving.
Shipka was great, there obviously were lots of 80s references but more fun were her reactions to them.
Some funny parts, some scary parts, and I always love the messed-up-time-travel thing.
It's a very 'soft' R, with just a few tweaks it could have been PG13.

I found the characters generally obnoxious, particularly the female lead (not the actress, but the character).

Re: Totally Killer (2023, D: Khan) S: Kiernan Shipka, Olivia Holt, Julie Bowen

I thought it was really fun. Great soundtrack too. But, I'm not going to overpraise it as there was some logic issues with the time machine and typical dumb actions by the teens. But, I liked Shipka and there were some fun moments, pop culture references and kills.

A very light R horror science fiction. Worthy of an evening watch if you have Prime video.

I watched this last night after seeing this thread. It was a lot of fun and I liked it a lot more than I was expecting too. The 80's callbacks were funny and not done to death, which was nice.

I agree with most everyone in this thread. A fun little movie that I enjoyed. Loved the time travel stuff, and the slasher stuff was good too. I liked that it didn't take itself too seriously, and all the characters just kind of "went" with the crazy premise of the film. I agree that Shipka did great in this. I never watched Sabrina so this is my first time seeing her in anything.

Watched this last night and agree with most here...this was way better than it needed to be and what I thought it would be.

Really ended up enjoying it.
