Re: May December (2023, D: Haynes) S: Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman

I had totally forgotten about this movie. Thought it was about Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman having a 6-month lesbian romance.

I was wrong.

This looks very good. Right up there with the wrestling film and Maestro as my most anticipated.

I Definitely will be checking this film out

Back in the late 80's Todd Haynes was a member of the video store I managed in Soho and he was a really nice guy. He gave us a VHS tape to watch of a short film he just made called Superstar which I really enjoyed (we could not rent that out of course). Been a fan of him ever since and very happy that he went on to a successful career.

Oh yeah that looks great. I did not have Reggie on my bingo card for who has a career after Riverdale

So Natalie Portman, whose big claim to fame was playing a woman who fell for a younger guy, is starring as an actress preparing to play the role of a woman who fell for younger guy. Interesting.

Jean Reno must be a lot younger than I thought.

Just finished and enjoyed it. A slow burn, a little uncomfortable. I got a.Black Swan vibe at the very end
Spoiler:
i though for sure someone was gonna get murdered and was surprised it didn't happen

I liked it though I thought I would love it.

Did not really connect or relate to the characters or if I did maybe I have issues

All the critics it seems love this movie and maybe it has Oscar buzz.

Might watch it again in the future.

Re: May December (2023, D: Haynes) S: Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman

Aside from the brilliant "Far from Heaven", I grew to appreciate most of Todd Haynes' work more after a few viewings. And I liked them all the first time. This was very good. I think this was Portman's best performance in years. Her character was fake, icy, and calculating. And she nailed it.

I liked Dark Waters. It was a good movie but it didn't really feel like Haynes film. This is a great return to form.

Great performances. So many well composed shots. Loved the scored.

They were touting this as a comedy-drama. I was unable to find any of the funny scenes in it? Did I miss them? Overall it was a good movie, but I felt bad for Joe at the end as he was waking up finally to what happened to him...

Re: May December (2023, D: Haynes) S: Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman

Not sure I'd call this a "comedy-drama", although there are a lot of humorous character moments throughout (Gracie worried they don't have enough hot dogs, the ex-husband going out of his way to wave to someone he knows because he wants to be seen having lunch with a celebrity...)

I enjoyed it a lot. The subject matter of the movie doesn't interest me, but each scene is full of nuances, and even the minor characters have a little story (the pet shop guy, the mysterious texting partner). Its a fascinating and stimulating movie. The more I think about it, the more I like it.

The exchange during the 10 minute mark of the video ("Who was the boss") is replicated in the movie.

Re: May December (2023, D: Haynes) S: Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman

It's slow moving but works up to some gut-punches. Natalie Portman is excellent as a cold hearted actress and so is Julianne Moore as a cold hearted non-actress. Todd Haynes direction is of course excellent. I've been a fan of his since Superstar. Charles Melton is terrific as the now 36 year old still stuck in his 13 year old mindset. I'm still kind of processing how I feel about it so another viewing in a couple of weeks is mandatory.

Good, but wildly overrated. Getting consideration for best film of the year? Please... I definitely understand the acting nominations

I agree in theory, if there were still 5 nominees. But with 10? Yeah, I could see it being included in the top 10.

Based on the combined Golden Globe Best ____ Film categories, Spider-Verse or Boy and the Heron could easily take its place

Only one nom, for original screenplay. I thought it was good but of course super uncomfortable the whole way through.

All I knew going in was the title and the cast, so I didn’t know which relationship the title referred to, and I liked watching things unfold. Why is the actress here? Something bad happened—what was it? I like to think the director intended it to work that way, but I may be the only person who was that clueless.

I went in thinking the movie was about a "May/December" romance between Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman.

I think that one was called “Chloe.”
