Never underestimate a Dublin woman with a guitar. Flora and Son premieres in select theaters September 22 and on streaming September 29.
Single mom Flora (Eve Hewson) is at a loss about what to do with her rebellious teenage son, Max (Orén Kinlan). Encouraged by the police to find Max a hobby, Flora tries to occupy him with a beat-up acoustic guitar. With the help of a washed-up LA musician (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Flora and Max discover the transformative power of music. From the musical mind of John Carney, "Flora and Son" explores the bond between a mother and son on a journey toward a new harmony.

I watched the trailer for this on YouTube today and I thought this feels like a John Carney movie and it was a John Carney movie. It looks good, but not as good as his previous movies. I think Eve Hewson looks a little young to have a son that old. She's 32, but looks younger. The character may have gotten pregnant really young for all I know though.

Another feel good film from Carney. I really enjoyed it. That last song in the pub though was a bit much. I was hoping for something more scaled back and raw. She did back up vocals on her son's music, but I thought this was her moment to have a go at it on her own?

Well, this was pretty fucking great. Loved everything about it. Carney really loves music. Once is one of my all time favs. Sing Street grand too. This was really good. I was instantly taken. Funny how this and CODA used the same song. This is a must see.

I liked this a lot, but would rank it on the lower end of Carney's work. That isn't a slight on the film though.

I liked it though maybe the ending seemed a little rushed and maybe unbelievable and was not as satisfying.
