Sorry to nitpick your excellent review, but Jenny was Victoria's niece.

Spoiler:
Oh and El ChapulŪn Colorado isn't so much a Mexican superhero per se but rather a parody of super heroes that ran for six seasons. I loved that show growing up.

Saw it yesterday as a $5 Fav at AMC. Didn't know anything about the character but was good, not great, movie. Good to see a Latin character but found it a bit predictable.

Felt like an amalgam of Ant-Man’s little brother and the show, Ms. Marvel.

Loved it. The 4K is stellar and the film hit all the right notes for me. Pissed that I missed it in IMAX since the 4K does not have the 1.90:1 scenes. The fact that the film cost just over 100 million and looks better than most current MCU bullshit is a testament to the talent that they were able to acquire to work on the film. I hope they make a sequel or a series. It's my favorite superhero film of the year.

Re: Blue Beetle (2023, D: Soto) -- The Spoiler Reviews Thread

I wish they'd offer separate releases of movies with shifting IMAX ratios. For instance, to date no one has released Mission: Impossible Ė Ghost Protocol with its shifting aspect ratio. The "Big Screen Edition" of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (which is also a slightly extended cut of the film) was a Wal-Mart exclusive BD. The UHD BD is the standard theatrical version only. Dune only got a 2.39:1 release on home video. Disney made all the IMAX versions of the MCU movies into Disney+ exclusives.

Other than Christopher Nolan being consistent in his movies having shifting aspect ratios on home video (or Zack Snyder going to the extreme of preserving the 1.43:1 sequences of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in their original aspect ratio, instead of cropping them to 1.78:1), it's random and technically rare when we get a BD or UHD BD with shifting aspect ratios to simulate the IMAX experience.

There won't be a sequel, but supposedly Gunn likes the Blue Beetle/Jaime Reyes character that he might use him as a secondary character in his new DCU.

Yeah, he said something to the effect that this iteration of Blue Beetle is the first DCU hero but this is not the first DCU movie. So if there is another BB movie down the road, it won't share any continuity with this film.

Kinda weird choice, since there's nothing in this movie that suggests it exists in the DCEU, so they could easily fit it in the upcoming DCU. Also, given Gunn was directly involved in the ending chosen for The Flash, to excise any teases for plot threads that will not be paid off, I am surprised he allowed them to keep the mid credits stinger of this movie untouched.

I bet it has little to do with the content of the film and 100% due to Gunn wanting his Superman to be the kick off of the new DCU.

Which is funny because, if old reports are to be believed, Gunn's Superman: Legacy was originally conceived as an offshoot akin to Joker and The Batman (the latter two now rebranded as Elseworlds features).

I wonder if Gunn's statements regarding BB are just a very awkward way of stating that SL is a prequel.

Welp, watched it last night. Glad i didn't pay to see it in the theaters. I liked it in general...but it was a by the numbers hero film. It felt very ANIME in that you had the stock characters and generic "young person gets a great power" story. Yes, that story can be good...but here in Blue Beetle nothing separated it from the 100s of other films like it. I also felt the comedy needed to be toned down by half; or, at least placed more on George Lopez and less on the main character and the rest of the family. I found myself feeling the comedy was for kids. In fact, it felt a lot like 2011 Green Lantern goofy. Not a fan of that vibe.

Pros:
-Blue Beetle costume
-Blue Beetle Base
-Weaving past Blue Beetle history into the story. Dan and Ted were not ignored.
-The emphasis on loving family at the end.
-George Lopez
-Susan Sarandon but also...see below

Cons:
-Lame comedy attempts. Felt childish
-Jaime screaming and being goofy in the story. Again felt very Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern.
-Boring generic plot/story.
-Susan Sarandon was wasted here in the 1 dimensional character role. They could have used someone who is still known but not as big as Sarandon.
-Feels like this movie isn't going anywhere in the new DC future

This is what stood out to me. Granted, these guys were scumbags but it is a gigantic plot point to have Jaime NOT kill someone, and his family is just stepping on people with a giant bug ship and shooting them full of bullets.

Also, the family blaming Jenny for what happened felt out of place since they were the ones who were basically playing hacky sack with the scarab.

The other weird thing to me was the whole "Edge Keys" thing. Did they cut a lot of it out, because until the scene at the very end there was nothing really showing us how great the Edge Keys are as far as unity (they did a fantastic job showing how tight knit the family was though), and the way they solve most of the problems at the end is by one of the characters being insanely rich and being able to handwave most of the issues they had away.

Also not their fault or anything, but the whole time I was thinking in that world how people would even know he's the first Hispanic superhero (to inspire other people)

Did Jaime kill anyone early on in the suit? I can't remember..

Actually, I think Jaime killing one person and being uber remorseful, THEN struggling to keep the Scarab from killing woulda been a more interesting thing to see. It would also give a deeper backstory to why he keeps yelling "don't kill".

Why wouldn't they start killing everyone? They basically killed his father. He died of a heart attack when the fascist force came in and assaulted everyone.

Payback, muthafuckas!

Re: Blue Beetle (2023, D: Soto) -- The Spoiler Reviews Thread

I noticed it's only the adults (Nana, Rocio, and uncle Rudy) that kill anyone. The kids (Jaime, Milagros, and Jenny) don't kill anyone. So I guess it was a narrative/creative decision to keep the kids "innocent".

Re: Blue Beetle (2023, D: Soto) -- The Spoiler Reviews Thread

Like I said, the movie makes it a major theme that Jaime doesn't want to kill period, no matter what. They set that up, then have the family kill people with no compunctions, basically using it as a joke. The sister like punches a normal human and he bounces off the wall. Jenny basically is an accessory to those people dying in the helicopter. But no Jaime can't kill the main bad guy who just murdered his own father and a dude that helped him out just minutes ago because reasons. Just seemed really silly to me.

They even used Kickstart My Heart over that scene, which rocked. The Atmos on the 4K disc was awesome.

Once again with the DCU. Watchable, enjoyable, but not loveable. Nothing sticks with me and Iíll never miss it if I donít see it again.
