People also need to remember that all Tom Cruise really has is Mission Impossible now.
He really cant sell much else by himself anymore. That ship sailed long ago. And he refuses to anything other than action roles now, which is a shame.
So there is no way they will kill Ethan Hunt off.

Just got back. Theater was about 75% full which seemed crazy to me on a Saturday mid-afternoon. Of course the 100 degree heat might be helping boost ticket sales.
I loved it. I'm kinda surprised by the mixed reviews in the thread. I do agree that it few by and didn't remotely feel like a 3 hour movie. The train sequence was phenomenal. It reminded me more of The Lost World than Uncharted though.
The car chase was eerily familiar to Fast X, as mentioned. Were they shot in the same location? Pretty wild how similar looking they were. I loved the car rolling and Cruise/Atwell switching seats. That was hilarious and one of those moments of, "how has no one done this before?"
I still have to give the edge to Fallout as my favorite. The highs and sequences were just so fucking amazing in Fallout it's going to be tough to top them. Even the bathroom fist fight, will be hard to top.
Lastly, one of the reasons I've grown to love this series is that the female leads are just as smart and badass as cruise and are never just props to propel the plot along. Atwell was an awesome addition. Likewise for Pom. Vanessa Kirby was a kickass addition in Fallout, but didn't have as much here. Sucks to see Ilsa go but the cast (especially the female cast) is ballooning.
I haven't followed his career but have loved him since NYPD:Blue and he's always awesome when he pops up in something I'm watching. I'm with you, he should be getting more prominent roles and more frequently.

Yeah that's crazy given the high review scores (rottentomatoes: 96/94). It's a couple hundred million (globally) shy of it's predecessor. Cruise can deliver on the blockbusters but he couldn't predict the Barbenheimer behemoth launching 9 days after MI. That has to be the biggest factor in the quick demise.

Paul Schrader posted that he hated this one. I like his scripts and most of his films, but he's starting to sound like a cranky old man. I remember when he was all up on Lena Dunham's jock when she did Tiny Furniture. That film is fucking horrible. I'm glad most of the mumblecore bullshit has finally faded away.

Caught this last night and loved it. The train sequence... wow. Not the best of all the MI movies but still excellent.
I couldn't help but think how McQuarrie delivers time and time again and I'm not trying to turn this thread into something it's not, but he might be an excellent candidate to direct a Star Wars movie. His plots are clever and the action is amazing and fast.

I think McQ is pretty much tied to doing all Tom Cruise movies for the foreseeable future.
Not even really kidding either. They are basically a team now.

I guess its a mutually beneficial relationship. Cruise keeps McQuarrie at the top of the box office and Mcquarrie allows Cruise to do whatever ridiculous stunt he can dream up.

I took our oldest to this for a matinee yesterday and we enjoyed it. I showed them the original on Blu-ray a year or two ago and they remember liking it but nothing beyond that. They'd seen a preview for this one and wanted to try it. It was good and the action was good. I think The Entity is a compelling villain and what a more "realistic" version of Terminator's Skynet could be in our world. I dunno. I don't want to down the rabbit hole too much there. I'm going to agree with a few others here and say the motorcycle cliff jump and the train sequence were excellent but looking back I wish I didn't know they were going to happen. Especially the train. There's a lot about what happened there which ended up little surprises, but the whole "this train is going off the tracks and falling" piece took away some of the finale's tension.
For all of the amazing production value, there was one item that stuck out like a sore thumb: close-ups with really bad editing. There were scenes of two characters talking and the shots would be all over the place for sight lines. Person A is looking to their right as they talk to Person B. Then Person B is looking to their right to respond to Person A. Then Person A is talking to the camera to respond to Person B. Then Person B is looking to their left but framed way, way over left to respond to Person A. Additonally, a lot of the dialogue in these closeups is so stilted and hammy, from Rhames, Cruise, etc. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt and say this is all about adding to the confusing nature of what's going on and play up the drama by being disorienting, but it was so mind-boggingly unnecessary. Please tell me I'm not the only one who picked up on this and found it bizarre.
I am pretty sure I've seen M:I 1-4 in the theater, but I really don't have any memory of seeing 5 or 6. I checked the recurring cast and characters list and I know I've seen a movie with Renner in it but don't remember Baldwin. I have them all on Blu-ray, I just haven't gotten around to it. Our kid is interested now, though, so we'll see. I will say I felt like I could pick up most of what was going on, in terms of story threads leftover from other movies.
I'm surprised by the box office but also not surprised. It's a packed summer. I'm actively making the choice here and there to say eh, we'll catch it at home later.
My theory: Ilsa is alive. We didn't see the body afterward. She'll make a surprise return. Why not?! Also, Emilio Estevez's character is alive, too!
