So with the strikes going on fans could end up having to wait five years to find out if this mission really was impossible.

Paper-thin pilot designed solely to get from one action sequence to the next. There were so many fake-outs, disguises, sleight of hand, and manipulations by this omnipotent "Entity" that I stopped caring entirely before the third act.

Definitely third in the McQuarrie installments for me, it was really good but just didn't match the greatness of those films. I did feel the length, I wouldn't have necessarily cut scenes, but it felt like every other one could've been trimmed - bringing this close to 2.5 hrs.
I also was disappointed with who we lost, it did feel so unnecessary that it very well could've been outside factors, a shame.
With talks of actors ages - you definitely can see it in Cruise, he still passes for early 50's but that's it. Regarding Rhames, not worried about his character but him personally as his weight has just ballooned.

I just got back from seeing it again in 4DX. That was one of the wildest movie experiences I’ve ever had.
It was literally an amusement park ride with no seat belt. I literally spilt a quarter of my popcorn bucket
The seats move and vibrate with every piece of action like cars crashing punches, spins and kicks. I felt like I was right there in that car chase in Rome. There are also light and wind effects that pop on in the theater. You felt the wind blow in your face when Ethan rode off that cliff and then crashed into the train. And you also felt Ethan running. It’s an expensive ticket for this format. Close to $24 and I’m sure most of you here would hate it
But I wanted to give it a try at least once and this movie definitely worked for it.

But not for 2 hours, 36 minutes. Lol

Anyone trying to push that narrative is stupid. Until TGM, Cruise never had any movie open above $100mil. Fallout opened with $60mil. This will earn atleast that much over the weekend + plus the Tues-Thurs take.

Ilsa’s sniper rifle was pretty great.
I wonder if they’re going to use another multi-head poster for part 2, or if not including Ilsa will be too spoilery for those who haven’t seen part 1.
I only rewatched #6 but was glad I had because I had forgotten the Vanessa Kirby character. As was mentioned in the pre-release thread, I get some components of these mixed up, like which movie has fake Wolf Blitzer, the armored-car heist, the whirling pool, etc.

The MI: series was never a billion dollar franchise. I think the reason this got heaviest attention of the series was that it was made at the height of the pandemic and costs ballooned because of the production and release delays, covid protocols and some crew members getting sick. And of course Cruise’s audio meltdown.

I'm sorry but that's just not true, and nobody is stupid for simply acknowledging that it's underperforming. And I'm a huge fan of the series and hope they make five more of them. But do you want an open discussion here or not? It looks like the answer is no...so what are we all doing here?

I really enjoyed this one. I’ll have to digest it a little more before I rank it with the others but I had a lot of fun watching this in IMAX. There were some great stunts and action. The yellow Fiat chase was great and the train finale was harrowing. Surprisingly, the 2:45 run time flew by quickly. It never felt overly long to me.
It did take me awhile to figure out the flashback with Gabriel WASN’T a flashback to the the first movie since it played out very similarly to a scene in M: I 1. For a few minutes, I thought they were retrofitting Gabriel in there.

I think it was none of those things - I think it was the teaser attached to Top Gun last year and people thinking that this would get a boost. (myself inlcuded) It clearly didn't. And while the film is very good imo it is not a home run 'must see' event so it doesn't get that added benefit either. If anything, the "part one" is a turn off to general audiences... I see a clear 2.5 hr self contained film that they could've made here.

And it's $56.2M for Friday through Sunday would be the 3rd best 3-day opening in franchise history. Ghost Protocol had a weird limited and then wide schedule.

The numbers are on par with this franchise.
SATURDAY PM UPDATE: Facts are facts, and Paramount/Skydance’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One set a 5-day opening domestic record for the franchise with $80M, we hear.
Previous best 5-day opening belonged to 2000’s Mission: Impossible II which cleared a Wednesday-Sunday take over Memorial Day weekend of $78.8M. The 3-day record still belongs to 2018’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout which posted $61.2M. Dead Reckoning looks to be coming in at $56.2M at 4,327 theaters, including Imax and PLF auditoriums. Dead Reckoning reps Oscar winning filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie’s third time directing a Mission movie after 2015’s Rogue Nation and Fallout. Technically, he has four Mission movies under his belt as he’s also directing Dead Reckoning Part Two. That movie had to pause recently due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

two things I did not care for and I gave the movie a 4.5/5 The opening sequence where they were talking about the AI seemed way too much like a play on some ancient Greek tragedy where everyone speaks a line in round table fashion seemed too far out of the ordinary not to make it a monologue for one or two people. and I was also quite irritated that Cruise slams not only into the correct train cabin but also smacks right into the bad guy with a gun. Both scenes took me out of the moment but overall it was really good.
I have always had a crush on Atwell so it was nice to see her get a really solid role but some part of me had trouble seeing her with her hair down, something about her looked off until she had a pony tale. I hate to be a misogynist but she is gorgeous and was smiling but she looked off to me for the first part of the film. Anyone else have that reaction?

I watched it on an IMAX screen and enjoyed it. It did feel a little long overall and the car chase scenes seemed to run long for sure.
The IMAX showing was almost full, but it didn't stop a large group of young (white) teenagers from showing up early in the movie, grabbing seats near the front, and chatting like they are at a party. People were hushing them, then yelling at them, and finally someone got theater security (who also looked like some young kid) who came in and yelled at the group to leave and they finally did, but still managing to act superior and snobby on the way out, as if to say "what's your problem, you don't like to see people having fun!?". This at what the rest of us paid $20 per ticket to see.

I also spent much of that scene wondering why the guy whose mask Ethan was wearing looked so familiar. I eventually realized that he looked like a young Willem Dafoe. To the point that I now want to see them together playing brothers or something, and I don’t even know who that actor is.

Caught this Friday and don't really have anything to say that hasn't already been said. Basically, I liked it and look forward to the next one.
I looked up the numbers for the other entries, and it appears that despite Tom Cruise and overall positive reviews, this franchise has never really torn it up stateside, especially when one factors inflation into the mix. Fallout is the top earner so far with $220 million domestic, and with rising ticket prices I would wager that puts it on about the same level as the first one in 1996.

I enjoyed the film overall, especially the car chase. The movie was a bit too long, though, and the slight of hand trick was overused. 4 out of 5 stars.
