We saw this in an oddly empty theater (probably 12-15 people total) with a couple of making out teenagers down the row from us and a group a couple rows down who was definitely on the same wavelength as we were. Honestly can't believe how much I enjoyed this after finding Fate, Hobbs & Shaw, and F9 so bloated and irritating. I really think this being "the beginning of the end" allowed them more creative freedom and have a modicum of stakes. Having less Vin Diesel certainly helped.

Learning about his contract about how he can't lose a fight or take X-number of hits in a fight, combined with his self-seriousness in the series has REALLY made me check-out when he's on screen. Him being on the back foot the whole movie helped digest all his egoism, which seemed to be at even higher parodic levels this time around.

Momoa was great as basically the Joker. I'm hoping the next film tones down Tyrese's obnoxiousness a little, given the character arc he goes through.

I gave it three stars because it was pretty entertaining overall, but nothing we haven't come to expect from this series. Since Cipher and Gisele are apparently allies, I guess this means we're going to discover that Elana wasn't really killed and those were just blanks in Cipher's gun ? Granted, a shot from that close would probably splatter everywhere, but...we never actually saw it...

I thought Tyrese was cool.

I like him in most stuff, including 2 Fast and Fast Five. Then after like the halfway mark in 6, I don't why he became so annoying to me

I should clarify that my comments regarding Dante beefing with Shaw are speculation assuming they choose to retcon Dante as the big bad of Hobbs & Shaw. As you might recall, the Eteon director taunts them both at the end with the fact that they don't remember the director. Before Fast X, and despite the character (which was briefly considered for Keanu Reeves) being voiced by Ryan Reynolds, I assumed the director was going to be revealed to be Cipher. If they choose to tie this all together in Saw-like fashion, I wouldn't put it past them to say it was Dante all along. But if they do that, they'd need a better reason than cos Shaw once worked with Dom.

Or Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell) will pop up as the Mr. Big Bad… before handing the baton to Abuela Torreto (Rita Moreno) and Mama Shaw (Helen Mirren), the true source of all evil in the world.

My moneys on Twinkie. 😉
I think you've gone from F&F fan fiction to full on Burn Notice territory there.

Not that I'd mind that crossover happening.

Re: Fast X (Fast & Furious 10) (2023, D: Leterrier ) -- The Spoiler Reviews Thread

I feel like I walked into the mirror universe here because I thought this was awful. I'm almost embarrassed that I was defending the series in another thread after seeing this one. It's barely even a movie. It's just an incoherent collection of scenes with random characters popping up left and right for 10 minutes and then disappearing never to be seen again. I mean, why was Brie Larson even in this movie? None of the set pieces were the least bit memorable, unless we're talking about how bad the final dam sequence was. But then again, after 10 previous movies, I'm not sure what else they can do.

I rewatched the entire series in the last 2 weeks to get ready and I think maybe it was too much. I still loved most of it up through 7, but by the time I got to F9, I was barely hanging on. I'd say I probably need to give X another shot, but I can't fathom watching it again anytime soon.

Re: Fast X (Fast & Furious 10) (2023, D: Leterrier ) -- The Spoiler Reviews Thread

I thought it was better than the last two. Shooting a car into space was almost the scene that made me jump the boat on this franchise. I just got curious and wanted to see how badass Vin Diesel thinks he is now since his character has pretty much become invincible. The mid-credits scene was a shock to me as I didn't expect it, but it would've been nice to see The Rock and Cena in the same scene together. Given Han, Gisele, and Letty have all come back from the dead, I see no reason why Jakob couldn't. Kind of missed the Tokyo Drift crew in this one, but they've been underutilized when they have returned anyway, so maybe they'll be back in the next one. I once again am invested, but I can't help but feel that this franchise is glorifying bad people.

I honestly did not seem to notice it before, but all the major releases is only getting one week on the premium screens. Is this due to way more new releases than in recent years?

Since March, John Wick Chapter 4 only got one week on IMAX, same goes for Dungeons and Dragons. Then Super Marios seems to be on that for well over a month. Then Guardians of the Galaxy 3 takes over for several weeks until Fast X. Now Fast X will be gone after one week on IMAX as The Little Mermaid is slated to take over tomorrow.

Correct. Even Sisu got Dolby Cinema here for 1 week. Little Mermaid gets it for one week and Spiderverse gets it next week for a week. Then Transformers for one, and then The Flash for another.

There are just not enough premium format screens for these tent pole movies. They make a lot of their money from them.

There's the problem right there. You can't listen to your favorite band for two months straight leading up to their new album, it's just never going to turn out well.

The problem is that the movie isn't good. But it certainly didn't help that I was burnt out when I watched it.

As a fan of the series since the original, I enjoyed this one, but I've definitely reached the point where the series needs to end, or at least for the major characters end with the next one. They can do spinoffs and the "next generation" sequels all they want. They're incredibly close to pushing it beyond the absurdly enjoyable at this point.

Well, they're turning this into a trilogy supposedly, so you might be on the hook for two more.

No, they never confirmed there was 2 more movies coming. At least the studio didn't. Vin was asked the question at a premiere and he just spoke off the top of his head at the possibility.

But, a lot if it will depend on how this film does worldwide. If it makes about the same as F9 or lower, then I highly doubt it. The franchise is 20 years old and 11 movies in. It's on the decline like any TV show that's been on over a decade. You're not going to get new fans and really only the hardcore fans are sticking around now.

So at this point the all "dead" characters are back, but the deceased Paul Walker's character is alive and living happily offscreen? That makes me uncomfortable in a way I can't quite describe.

It is definitely getting to the point of absurdity that he's missing. They're really in a catch-22 regarding Paul Walker's death making Brian's absence around Mia weird and Jordana Brewster losing work through no fault of her own. I kind of appreciate that they don't even bother mentioning him this time. It's a real, "Look audience, you know what the deal is, OK?"

That's what I said above. Just bring Brewster back and don't mention Brian or their kid. The audience gets it. Move on.

That's why I said "supposedly."

Re: Fast X (Fast & Furious 10) (2023, D: Leterrier ) -- The Spoiler Reviews Thread

My son had never seen any of the Fast movies so we've been watching them off and on when he's been back from college. Now that he's home for the summer, we did 5-9 over the last week. It was super fun to go into this movie feeling pretty up-to-speed on everything. I love how they keep going back to the other films and adding things that could be plausible (we didn't actually see who was driving the car with the mini-gun in Fast Five, for example).

Momoa was a fantastic villain and unlike anyone we've seen in the film so far. And it was fun to see Theron in action too. It's amazing how many people they got back (especially knowing some of the behind the scenes drama) and I was stoked to see Giselle return, as her "death" was really ambiguous even before they started bringing characters back.

Every time something wild happens in one of these movies my son goes "remember this all started with them stealing VCRs". What a ride

Didn't Luke Evan's Owen Shaw point that out to Dom during their first encounter in Furious 6?

He did! I love it when they acknowledge how ridiculous this all is.
